Major shock at Treborth – Bangor 1876 lose league game at home for first time ever as Llangefni spring a surprise

There was a major surprise at Treborth tonight as Bangor 1876 lost their unbeaten league record this season after Matty Jones converted an added-time penalty for an ecstatic Llangefni.

Having won 7-2 at Cefni in December, 1876 were favourites to complete a double over the Anglesey side and claim top spot in the Ardal North West on goal difference.

However, Michael Johnston’s side found the going tough all evening and despite taking a 73rd minute lead, Town refused to give up the ghost and returned home with all three points.

Llangefni were in eighth place before start of play and had shown a lot of improvement lately after a difficult start to the season.

James Saxon’s side were on a five-match unbeaten run, their last defeat having been that 7-2 home caning at the hands of 1876 on December 9.

It was a different story at Treborth, with Bangor losing a home league game for the first time ever since forming in 2019-20.

Their previous 29 home league matches had seen them win 28 and draw just the one – against Llay Welfare this season, a 2-2 split back in August.

Tonight’s battle saw Cefni more than hold their own until Liam Morris made it 1-0 to the hosts 17 minutes from time. Soon after Llangefni coach Gerallt Jones was shown a red card.

Anyone expecting a late deluge from renowned strong finishers Bangor were in for a shock, as on 80 minutes Gerwyn Roberts made it one-apiece.

Bangor’s Kian Owen was sent off for a second yellow three minutes into overtime and then the visitors were awarded a penalty which Matty Jones scored to secure the shock of the season in Ardal North West so far.
