TOP 10 FAW AMATEUR TROPHY SHOCKS IN 2022

1 – Caergybi 3-0 Cefn Albion R1 SEP 3

Tier 5 turned over Tier 3 in an absolute stunner in early September.

Albion arrived at Holyhead top of Ardal North East, while hosts Caergybi were mid-table in North Wales Coast West Division One.

Cefn had won 4-1 at Millbank the previous season in the Welsh Cup first round and were strong favourites to repeat the dose.

However, Dale Moffat’s Caergybi had other ideas.

Goals from Louis Chapman (2) and Tom Hadley produced a huge upset which ranks as the best result in Caergybi’s short history.

2 – Trearddur Bay 2-0 Llannefydd R3 OCT 29

Trearddur have produced a host of cup shocks since their first team returned to senior football this season.

Nick Dumbarton’s tier 5 outfit were certainly second favourites when they welcomed fourth-tier high flyers Llannefydd to Lon Isallt at the end of October.

But it was the Anglesey side who triumphed against the odds – both goals coming from the sensational Asa Thomas.

Thomas’ 21st and 22nd goals of the season came after 27 and 60 minutes respectively, Myles Jones and Ry Lees with the assists.

3 – Llanberis 3-2 Caersws R3 OCT 29

Llanberis did North Wales massively proud by twice coming from behind to sink hot favourites Caersws 3-2 at Ffordd Padarn.

The tier 3 Ardal North East visitors, who were in the Cymru Premier not so long ago, led through goals from Norton Collins and Neil Mitchell, but Ifan Mansoor, Nidian Huws and 91st minute match-winner Cian Fleming delivered a famous win for the Darans.

The result was even more remarkable as the hosts had missed a late penalty through Dion Owen, only to grab that late decider.

4 – Nefyn United 4-2 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 OCT 29

This tie came seven days after 1879’s highly controversial 2-1 home defeat to Bangor 1876 in the Ardal North West League.

Rhyl were weakened due to suspensions and injuries, but still took a decent squad to the Llyn Peninsula.

Tier 4 Nefyn won it through goals from Rhys Williams, Josh Piper, sub Jack Jones and an OG from Elliott Evans.

Leon Atkins and Jonny Taylor replied for the visitors, but on an afternoon where difficult conditions proved a leveller at Cae’r Delyn, it was not enough.

A tremendous result for the Penwaig against a team from a level higher.

5 – FC Queen’s Park 1-0 Penycae R1 SEP 3

Cup upset specialists Queen’s Park from tier 4 knocked out fellow Wrexham area side Penycae of tier 3 at The Tip.

The Park edged the first half and created a number of half chances, Lewis Evans and Adam Roberts getting themselves into good positions.

Penycae started the second half more brightly and the Park’s keeper Josh ‘Jacko’ Edwards was forced into one great save.

With the game in the balance, on 64 minutes Jake Harper pounced on a defensive mistake to strike towards goal, as the ball rebounded out the tireless Jack Hanley was clinical as he came inside and dinked a beautiful effort into the net.

6 – Cefni 2-1 Llansannan R1 SEP 3

Goal machine Jamie Lee Patterson struck in the 73rd and 90th minutes to deliver a dramatic victory for the islanders.

Caergybi were not the only tier 5 Anglesey team to cause a shock in this round.

Cefni, who had lost four of their six league matches, turned over Llansannan, seventh in the tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier and already conquerors of Cerrigydrudion and third-tier Brickfield Rangers in the Welsh Cup.

7 – Aberffraw 3-1 Rhayader Town R3 OCT 29

Kings of the upset, Aberffraw of tier 4, turned on the magic again to send Rhayader Town of the third-tier Ardal North West crashing out 3-1.

Mark Jones, Iolo Jones and Callum Edwards with an injury-time clincher secured progression for the Anglesey heroes.

Fletcher Chandler had brought it back to 2-1 before Grant Stamp missed a penalty for the Powys visitors.

8 – Mochdre Sports 2-2 Llanfair United (Mochdre 4-2 on pens) R3 OCT 29

Sports really smashed the odds by knocking out Ardal North East title contenders Llanfair United on penalties at Swan Road.

The tier 4 hosts from the North Wales Coast East Premier held their opponents to 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes,

Harvey Holmes struck twice for Mochdre in the first half, Nyasha Mwamuka and Jake Mann hitting back to make it all-square at the break.

No goals in the second half so it was down to pens, Gareth Jones, Jack Jeffers, Kai Davies and Niall Owen converting for the hosts to seal them a 4-2 success, Llanfair missing their opening two. Nic Bould produced a vital shoot-out stop for the hosts.

9 – Bethesda Athletic 1-1 Bow Street (Bethesda won 6-5 on pens) R3 OCT 29

Bethesda were overjoyed after seeing off tier 3 Bow Street, who had been recent Welsh Cup conquerors of Bangor 1876.

After a 1-1 draw at Treborth, Pesda of the tier 4 North Wales Coast West Premier Division triumphed 6-5 on penalties.

Gari Wyn Owen gave Mark Hughes’ side an eighth-minute lead before Ifan Burrell levelled on 72. Bow had Joshua Ferreira dismissed for a second yellow after 63 minutes.

The penalties contest saw Joe Todd, Scott Hughes, Daniel Hughes, Dean Redmond, Gari Wyn Owen and Cian Williams put away the vital kicks which sent the underdogs through.

10 – Trearddur Bay 4-1 Penmaenmawr R2 OCT 1

Tier 5 side Trearddur Bay delivered the goods in style as they whipped higher level Penmaenmawr 4-1 at Lon Isallt.

All the goals came in the first half, Asa Thomas with a double, while Tom Scott and Mel McGinness were also on target.

Daniel Williams provided the sole reply for Phoenix, who were unbeaten in five.
