Title-winning goalkeeper Sara Williams to rejoin Amlwch Town

One of North Wales’ most experienced female footballers is excited about returning to a former club in the new season.

Sara Williams, goalkeeper for Llandudno in their Ardal North title-winning campaign, is signing back for Amlwch Town in 2022-23.

Mother-of-three Sara, 34, normally plays outfield, but answered Tudno’s need for an emergency stand-in keeper last season.

She produced some fantastic performances, conceding just 18 goals in 14 games, by far the lowest total in the league.

Sara, who hails from Caernarfon, confirmed: “I have decided to go back to Amlwch next season. To be honest this could be my last season and I have made the decision to play outfield.

“I’ve missed all the girls from Amlwch since I played for them before and I’m so looking forward to being part of the team again.”

Sara said a special thank you to Llandudno manager Sarah Colville and all the players, management and officials at Maesdu Park for making her so welcome last season.

“Sarah and everyone at Llandudno FC were amazing last season and also the years before that when I played for them. They have always supported my decision and always had my back.”

Sara started playing football at the age of eight for Llechid Celts, and was the only girl in the team.

Having three brothers who were always playing football and the fact her father used to manage Bethesda U-15’s, it was inevitable Sara would follow suit.

Her first senior team was Colwyn Bay Ladies, who were champions of the North Wales League at the time and packed with many good players.

Later came stints with Llandudno Junction, Amlwch Town and Bangor City.

While with Junction Ladies she won Club Player of the Year and in 2014/15 at Amlwch, she received Manager’s Player of the Year.

Caernarfon Town are another of Sara’s former clubs. She skippered the Canaries in the Welsh Premier League in 2017-18.

Next was a move to Mountain Rangers, where she also wore the captain’s armband.

Before 2020-21, Sara and Elena Julio were due to take over as player-managers of Rangers, but the team was forced to fold in the summer.

That left the much-sought-after Sara without a club and Llandudno were quick to snap her up.

Unfortunately, the 2020-21 season was cancelled completely due to Covid-19.

However, the birth of the Genero Adran North gave Sara a new opportunity as a goalkeeper at Maesdu Park – and how she took it!

Now a new adventure awaits at Amlwch, who finished fourth in the North Wales Women’s League last season.

Town already have an established keeper in Ceri Pritchard, so Sara, who has already said she is signing as an outfield player, will most likely slot into defence.
