Bodedern Athletic – five huge wins which helped their quest for the title

BODEDERN ATHLETIC – FIVE CRUCIAL GAMES IN THE 2021-22 NORTH WALES COAST WEST PREMIER DIVISION TITLE RACE

Sep 17: Gwalchmai (away) 4-2

An early test of Bodedern’s title credentials came at Maes Meurig and they had to fight hard to get the win.

A determined young Gwalchmai team were all out to upset their local rivals and at half time it stood 2-2, Dion Owen and Connor Owen scoring for the hosts, Jordie Murphy and Marc Evans for the visitors.

In the second half, Boded upped their game and a double from Asa Thomas carried them to victory.

Nov 6: Penrhyndeudraeth (home) 2-1

Casey Gregg’s 78th minute wonder strike made sure Athletic completed a 12th straight league win.

Despite being without a number of key players, including Asa Thomas, Casey Boylan and Sean Pritchard, as well as losing Jordan Taylor to a broken shin on 40 minutes, Ricky Williams’ men saw off the challenge of a tough Penrhyn side.

After a goalless first half, Tom Wood edged Athletic in front on 55 minutes, but Steven Jones equalised in the 67th. Then came Gregg’s special moment.

Nov 20: Bangor 1876 (home) 3-2

Bangor 1876 had never lost a league game before – until this famous day at Cae Ty Cristion.

A massive crowd was in attendance as Asa Thomas handed Boded a half-time lead, but after the break 1876 turned the tables with goals from Chris Jones (penalty) and Sion Edwards on the hour.

Two Marc Evans penalties clinched the win for Bodedern – their 13th on the bounce.

Apr 5: Llanberis (away) 5-0

What a performance this was.

Llanberis can trouble the very best – especially at home – and no doubt other clubs saw Boded’s midweek visit to Ffordd Padarn three days after a hard battle with Nefyn to be a major test.

Yet Athletic swept aside the Darans, Marc Evans striking twice, Asa Thomas, Sam Gregson and James McMinimee – his first league goal of the season – the rest.

Apr 23: Penrhyndeudraeth (away) 2-1

Having already beaten high-flyers Penrhyn three times this season, the law of averages suggested the talented Maes-y-Parc side might have better luck at the fourth time of asking.

Bangor 1876 knew that if the Cockles Army could take a point off Boded, it would open the door for them to have a chance of taking the title race to the last day of the season at Treborth.

However, Bodedern battled their hearts out, leading at half time through Marc Evans, who added a second on 74 minutes after Richard Jones had equalised for Penrhyn.

The title was now very much in sight for Ricky Williams’ warriors…..
