Before a ball was kicked at Cae Ty Cristion today, Bodedern Athletic knew they were the inaugural North Wales Coast West League Premier Division champions.

Bangor 1876’s surprise 1-0 loss at Glantraeth last night merely brought forward the inevitable – that Ricky Williams’ unstoppables were going to win the Tier 4 title.

Many neutrals may have wanted next weekend’s 1876 v Bodedern match at Treborth to be a title decider, but Athletic have proved far too good to avoid such a scenario.

27 matches, 26 wins, one draw, 0 defeats with 124 goals scored and just 17 conceded – phenomenal stats from a very special team.

Boded’s first match as champions was against long-time rivals Gwalchmai and although the title destination was already known, nothing took the gloss of an amazing day for the Ynys Môn village based about seven miles from Holyhead.

Captain fantastic Casey Boylan struck the opening goal for the Green Army after 27 minutes.

Then on 38 minutes, Asa Thomas banged in his 40th league goal of the campaign and 57th in all competitions to make it 2-0.

Thomas’ strike today made it a stunning 18 league goals in his last eight appearances.

No day would have been complete without a goal from Thomas’ partner-in-goals Marc Evans and ‘Logs’ added a third for the hosts on 72 minutes – his 60th in all matches and 37th in the league.

Then it was time for the presentation of the championship trophy to Boded skipper Casey Boylan.

Among those dignitaries present was Anglesey man and former FAW president Trefor Lloyd Hughes, who as a 15-year-old used to sell tickets for 10p door-to-door to raise money for his local club – Bodedern FC.

And the success story for Bodedern Athletic might not stop at the league title as they are still in the NWCFA Intermediate Cup and Premier Cup competitions, so a treble remains possible.

They have secured the one they truly wanted though, and hopefully can now get accepted for the promotion to Tier 3 they richly deserve.
