Ardal North West – penalty save inspires Felinheli victory, Rhostyllen and Llanrwst in 8-goal cracker

Guto Hughes’ 58th minute penalty save provided Y Felinheli with the inspiration to go on and claim their fourth home win of the season.

Saturday’s success at Cae Seilo lifted Euron Davies’ side out of the bottom five in Ardal North West.

After a goalless first half, Saltney were awarded a spot-kick just before the hour, but 19-year-old Hughes kept out Steve Chiocchi’s effort.

Six minutes later the home side took the lead, Gruff John somehow arching his back to head in a Rhys Parry corner which was veering away from goal.

As Felinheli’s ever-witty cameraman Patrick Cain said on social media to the scorer: “How the hell did you get your head on that ball – would have pulled my back out.”

Gruff John has always found a way to score goals and he was not finished in this game yet!

In the 78th minute Felinheli were awarded a penalty which John put away for his seventh goal of the season.

Saltney’s forgettable afternoon was made complete when they had Ben Barratt red-carded.

In atrocious conditions, these sides laid on an eight-goal classic.

Llanrwst led 3-0 at half time, Rhostyllen fought back to be 4-3 ahead only for the visitors to plunder a 90th minute equaliser.

United struck first on 15 minutes when they completely opened up the home defence for Gwion Owen to slot in.

Five minutes later the home back-line was found wanting again as Callum Parry made it 2-0.

With the wind in the visitors’ favour, Parry added a third for the Roosters before the break – his 19th league goal of the season.

Things needed to change if Rhostyllen were to get back in the match and the introduction of prolific scorer Tom Douglas proved a masterstroke.

Douglas soon had an impact, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes.

With Rhostyllen pushing for an equaliser, in the 70th minute Will Nevitt had the last touch to send the ball over the line to make it 3-3

Super sub Douglas then made it 4-3 on 82 minutes to complete a remarkable turnaround.

However, Benn Lundstram popped up to equalise for the Conwy Valley men in the 90th minute.

With a relegation battle on the horizon last month, Llandudno Albion have found form at just the right time.

Darren Jones’ side made it three straight wins on Saturday.

Dave Maddock, Ricky Jones and Jordan Kane netted the away goals, Aiden Fox with a solitary reply.

Saints’ first league match of 2022 saw them pick up where they left off with an away caning of Brymbo.

In Ardal North West action for the first time in seven weeks, having beaten Llanuwchllyn 5-3 and Llandudno Albion 3-0 in their previous two games, Asaph’s latest triumph yanked them out of the bottom two.

Two notable names on the North Wales sports scene netted a pair apiece for City – former Rhyl and Bangor City Welsh Premier title winner James Brewerton and St Asaph cricketing hero Jason Foulkes.

Ali Parsonage added a fifth for good measure.

Jonathan Collo, Luke Taylor and Jack Mountford shared the goals which secured Llay a comfortable success against the Quarrymen.

Connor Whelan handed Rhydymwyn a fourth-minute lead, but Jamie Jones’ equaliser on the half-hour was enough to earn Nantlle a point.
