Richard Capper takes over as Brymbo manager after Ricky Evans departs

New Brymbo manager Richard Capper faces the tough task in 2022 of getting the Steelmen moving up the Ardal North West table.

Third from bottom of the tier 3 league, the Wrexham side have won just one of their last 12 matches.

The experienced Ricky Evans stepped down from the manager’s role last week.

Evans is replaced by Capper, who is joined by Nick Ward as his number two and Matt Torgersen as goalkeeper coach in addition to existing first team coaching staff Josh Owen and Natalie Brown.

Following a tough four months on the pitch for Brymbo, Capper will be looking to add some quality to the squad once the registration window opens in January as well as working with and consolidating the current group of players.

Capper brings a wealth of experience and is highly respected and regarded as one of the best coaches in North Wales.

He joined Wrexham AFC’s Centre of Excellence In February 2011 and stayed until May 2017, working with foundation phases 7-12’s and part of the recruitment team for all ages.

Capper later became joint head of foundation phase and went on to work for an interim period of games with Joey Jones‘ Wrexham Youth side following Andy Davies’ promotion to assistant-manager with the first team.

In 2016-17, Capper joined Cymru Alliance side Gresford Athletic as first team coach. The team finished third in the table and lifted the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

In his second season, Capper was promoted to assistant-manager with Gresford ending up mid-table and runners-up in the league cup.

The next campaign at Clappers Lane brought another mid-table finish and a NEWFA Cup final, this time losing out to Cefn Druids 4-1.

In the 2019/2020 season, Capper was promoted to first team manager at Gresford before the campaign was cut short due to Covid. He left the role in June 2020, being replaced by Eddie Maurice-Jones.

Farewell to Ricky

Ricky Evans departed the Steelmen following a meeting with the club’s committee.

The former Welsh Premier midfielder had a difficult few months at Brymbo in terms of player availability which ultimately saw the team take only four points since August.

A club statement said: “We would like to thank Ricky for his commitment to the club during the past 7 months. His desire and will to win is unquestionable and we would like to wish him all the very best for the future.”
