Welsh Cup quarter-final draw takes place tonight

Tonight brings the draw for the quarter-finals of the JD Welsh Cup.

The event will be broadcast on FA Wales Facebook and YouTube platforms from 8 pm this evening.

North Wales interest remains in the competition through Bala Town and Connah’s Quay Nomads of the Cymru Premier and tier 2 Cymru North side Colwyn Bay.

Colwyn Bay advanced to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1991-92 after knocking out Cymru Premier side Cardiff Met University 1-0 at Llanelian Road.

S4C Sgorio cameras were there to witness the Cymru North team, in only their second season back in Welsh football, make the last eight thanks to Jack Higgins’ ninth-minute goal.

It was 29 years ago that the Seagulls made the semi-finals of Wales’ premier knockout, eliminating Wrexham 3-1 in a replay in the quarters before losing 4-2 on aggregate over two legs to Hednesford Town in the last four.

After that 1991-92 campaign, Bay did not compete in the Welsh Cup again until 2019-20 due to ‘exiled’ clubs playing in the English pyramid being banned from entering.

The Seagulls attracted a large crowd for Saturday’s tie, which saw Andy Coughlin save an Adam Roscrow penalty. The hosts produced a fantastic defensive effort in the second half to hold on for the win.

Saltney Town, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, were left heartbroken after going out 5-4 on penalties to Cymru Premier favourites Aberystwyth Town.

The tier 3 Ardal North West club, who battled through five rounds to reach the last 16, knocking out two higher-level sides along the way, held Aber to 0-0 only to exit on spot-kicks after an heroic effort where they more than held their own.

Caernarfon Town departed the competition in the same way, holding fellow Cymru Premier side Penybont to a 0-0 draw but losing out 3-1 on spot-kicks.

Buckley Town went down 2-0 at home to Taffs Well, Marcus Jones and Jack Fox with the first-half goals for the Cymru South visitors.

Chris Venables’ six-minute hat-trick in the second half put Bala Town through 3-1 at Haverfordwest County.

On Friday evening, Connah’s Quay Nomads reached the quarter-finals with a 2-0 triumph at neighbours Flint Town United, Jamie Insall and Jamie Mullan with the all-important goals after 29 and 47 minutes respectively.

The New Saints also squeezed through on penalties – 5-4 after being held 0-0 by Carmarthen Town.

Guilsfield joined Colwyn Bay as the only two Cymru North sides left in the competition after a 2-1 success at Swansea University, Chris Cathrall and Andrew Ford finding the net.
