Farewell Brymbo Victoria – club resigns from North East Wales Football League

Brymbo Victoria have resigned from the North East Wales Football League.

The team began the season in the tier 4 North East Wales Premier Division and won their opening match against Overton 2-1.

However, a 4-1 loss at New Brighton Villa and a 10-1 hammering at home by Halkyn and Flint Mountain followed before a 4-1 reverse to Lex XI in the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

The club’s history actually dates back to the early 1900’s when they won the Wrexham and District League Division One championship three times and were Welsh Amateur Cup runners-up in 1908.

Modern-day Victoria joined the former tier 5 North East Wales League in 2017-18, finishing 10th in their debut season and seventh the following campaign.

In the 2019-20 season, shortened due to Covid 19, Vics finished top of the table but lost out on the title to Chirk Town on the points-per-game method.

Nonetheless, the club secured a tier 4 spot for the current term and played at the impressive Bronwen’s Green pitch.

Today the Vics announced they had no alternative but to pull out of the league.

The club released the following statement:

“Tonight, we have made the difficult decision to fold as a club. This isn’t a decision that we have made lightly.

“Brymbo Victoria was born from a rather unsuccessful Sunday league side.

“With a lot of hard work and dedication, we achieved Tier 4 status at the start of the pandemic. Obviously we were pleased with this achievement and believed we’d be competitive at this level.

“Sadly, after an 18-month break from competitive action, we lost several players.

“With the loss of the core of the team that got us promoted and a lack of new faces, we have found the start of the new season a real struggle. This has led to more players either calling it a day or looking for a new club. This has left us in a position where we can no longer continue.

“We’d like to pass on our thanks to Brymbo community council, particularly Paul Rogers and Ken Matthews for the support we have received.

“A massive thanks to you Joeanne and Michael at Y Tai for always welcoming us and opposition teams to their pub and for their excellent hospitality.

“We finish proud of what we have achieved as a group of friends having a kickabout. We wish all players past and present all the best for the future and hope many of you continue to play.

“It’s been a great journey. UP THE VICS!”

All of Brymbo Victoria’s results for the 2021-22 season will now be expunged from the North East Wales Premier Division.
