Huge happy birthday to Flint Town United midfielder Alex Jones, born on August 4, 1994.
When Alex, a former pupil of Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan, Abergele, who hails from Rhuddlan, signed for Flint last season he was back where he belongs – the Cymru Premier League.
The 27-year-old had previously shone in the top flight with Rhyl, his busy, combative midfield style aligned to tremendous fitness making him the perfect fit for national league football.
Alex joined Rhyl in July 2016 from Prestatyn Town and made an immediate impact at Belle Vue in his debut season in the Welsh Premier League.
His attacking midfield skills came to the fore and he attracted national recognition with his man of the match performance against Airbus UK Broughton where he scored two goals in front of the live Sgorio cameras.
These performances led to him being awarded the Welsh Premier Player of the Month for September 2016.
Alex maintained his all-energy level of performances which saw him score another double from midfield away at Llandudno as the first phase came to an end.
An injury saw his appearances curtailed in the second phase as Rhyl failed to pick up the points to survive. His overall contribution to the squad saw Alex voted as the Manager’s Player of the Year at the end of season club award night.
Alex committed to the Lilywhites for the 2017/18 season despite the team’s relegation to the Huws Gray Alliance.
It was an injury-hit campaign for the midfielder and in January 2018 he temporarily hung up his boots due to work commitments.
He returned to football in 2018-19, re-signing for Prestatyn Town whose fortunes improved after Neil Gibson returned as manager.
The following season, Alex captained the Seasiders to the tier 2 Cymru North title.
Last season, 2020-21, brought much uncertainty at Prestatyn and Alex joined former boss Gibson at Flint.
He made 18 appearances, scoring three goals, and is now looking forward to another campaign in the CPL with the Silkmen.
Also celebrating his birthday today is Alex’s twin James Jones, current captain of the newly-formed CPD Y Rhyl 1879.
James is also a highly respected performer and Grassroots North Wales hopes to publish an article on his career in the near future.
Happy birthday Alex and James.
