It would be so sad to lose Amlwch Town’s women team – but football can be cruel

Losing Amlwch Town’s women’s football team from the North Wales League would be extremely sad.

From fairly humble beginnings, the Anglesey side had really come on in leaps and bounds over the past two seasons.

In 2018-19, I watched them win the league Supplementary Cup at Rhyl, Cerys Gadd and Lexi Crawley with the vital goals in a 2-1 win over Wrexham.

The spirit in the squad was fantastic that night, every player played their part and the celebrations were as awesome as they come.

That summer Amlwch strengthened considerably, signing the cream of the Ynys Môn team which had won silver at the Inter-Island Games.

Town began the 2019-20 season on fire and went on to win the North Wales Division Two title, going unbeaten and scoring a deluge of goals with Crawley and Ffion Owen leading the way.

The natural next step for Amlwch would have been to be one of the elite eight in the Tier 2 North division formed as part of the Welsh women’s pyramid restructure.

Sadly, the islanders did not make it and now the wheels seem to have fallen off.

Within a couple of days, managers Mo Eynon and Charlotte Webb stepped down, and the difficult search for a new head coach began.

Several key players have also left Lon Bach. I know of a few departures, but have been asked to withhold most of the details for now.

It is difficult at this time of the year, many women’s teams seem reluctant to part with any information.

Only Johnathan Batten, head coach of CPDM Bangor 1876, has given me any solid transfer news.

Other teams have been far less forthcoming and would be more than happy to leave me waiting till the first weekend of the season, not really grasping that I have a job to do and want to keep the women’s football scene updated to the best of my ability.

One problem facing Amlwch is the intention of two new teams on Anglesey to enter the North Wales League this season.

Llangefni Town and Trearddur Bay Bulls are building up their squads nicely and look capable of giving it a good go.

Unfortunately, there are probably not quite enough senior (16+) players on the island to form three strong teams.

When that happens, some benefit and others miss out. It’s nothing personal, it’s sad but it’s football. We all want the best for our clubs.

Hopefully, Amlwch’s appeal for players will be successful and we can have three Ynys Môn teams competing in the season ahead.

After making such great progress, it would be a massive pity for Amlwch’s rise to prominence to end.

But for now, let’s just say thank you for the entertainment Amlwch – you have been amazing.
