Here is a news item from almost 10 years ago about yet another end-of-season success for Caernarfon Town women’s football team.
The report appeared in the media on May 29, 2011 and is about Caernarfon winning the double of North Wales Coast League and Welsh Premier North Conference.
Caernarfon Town women’s football team completed the North Wales coast double last Sunday for the third season in succession.
The Cofis needed to win the top-of-the-table clash against league leaders Northop Hall to lift the title, whilst the Flintshire outfit required only a draw to be crowned champions.
After a scrappy start, The Oval squad opened the scoring with an 18th minute volley from the edge of the box by Ceryl Jones.
It was Jones again 10 minutes later from almost the same spot with another rasping volley to make it 2-0 at the turnaround.
After the break, the Cofis took command of the game, with Jones finding the net twice more and Alison Mummery, with a left-foot strike from 25 yards, completed the 5-0 victory.
Caernarfon Town women have had an exceptional season.
They were finalists in the Welsh Cup and in the National Premier League play-off, losing to Swansea City twice, and despite an injury-ridden season, they managed to complete a run of twice-weekly games caused by a daunting fixture pile-up.
They say good-bye to long-serving captain Iona Williams, who has led the team to so many triumphs in recent times.
Manager Keith Fearns paid tribute to The Oval stalwart: “She has been a great servant to the club,” he said.
“We will miss her classy football. This has been her best season and she’s got a season or two left in her.”
