Flashback – 10 years ago: Nantlle Vale give mighty Bangor big scare in Coast Cup

Ten years ago tonight Nantlle Vale of the tier 3 Welsh Alliance League pushed their illustrious hosts all the way to extra time before City eventually ran out winners thanks to a Sion Edwards wonder goal..

This twice postponed Challenge Cup third round tie finally got underway at Farrar Road – and a great contest it proved to be..

Bangor’s line-up saw Chris Oldfield start in goal, defender Dylan Roberts come into the defence and young Gwion Jones line up in midfield alongside Sion Edwards and Chris Jones. There was also a rare run out for Marc Limbert at the back.

The Citizens forged the better first half openings but neither Sion Edwards – outstanding in midfield – or Mark Smyth up front alongside Michael Jukes – could convert chances into goals.

Nantlle were working hard across the midfield and defence to protect goalkeeper Meilir Huws, who was in superb and defiant form.

Half-time: 0-0

The second half burst into life with Bangor taking a two-goal lead.

First of all, a fairly harsh penalty was awarded when a visiting defender was hit on the arm from a corner.

The spot-kick responsibility fell to Smyth, who calmly converted despite goalkeeper Huws guessing right.

Minutes later blues central defender and recent signing Darren Moss ventured upfield to put City two-nil ahead. Game over? Not quite!

Nantlle substitute Sion Foulkes scored twice in eight destructive minutes, first on 78 and then on 86 from outside the box to send the match into extra time to the delight of the visiting contingent.

Full-time: 2-2

Extra time got underway with both sides showing signs of tiredness, but the first half remained goalless.

As the second period got underway Sion Edwards spotted Huws off his line and sent a 50-yard shot floating over him. Cruel and brilliant in equal measure as the tiring Vale side ran out of steam.

But a 3-2 win nonetheless and one which booked a quarter-final date with Denbigh Town.
