Pleasing to see new Cymru Premier champions target local talent

It is pleasing to see the new Cymru Premier champions snapping up local talent in their bid to become even stronger next season.

This week saw Connah’s Quay Nomads announce the signing of Danny Davies from Prestatyn Town.

Davies’ arrival comes soon after manager Andy Morrison also kept it local by snapping up Aeron Edwards from The New Saints.

One of the stars of Prestatyn’s title-winning Cymru North 2019-20 campaign, Davies notched several vital goals for the Seasiders, none more so than the decider in a 1-0 defeat of nearest challengers Flint Town United on February 22.

In a successful two-year spell at the Motion Finance Stadium, Davies also landed the Manager’s Player of the Season award at the end of 2018/19.

Davies, 24, is an ex-professional cricketer, having played for Northamptonshire as well as spending three separate stints in Australia.

He returned to the UK after injuring his arm and decided to get back into football.

Prior to making his mark as a cricketer, Davies started his football career as a Prestatyn youngster before joining Chester City’s Academy.

The self-described attacking wing-back made his Welsh Premier League debut for Prestatyn’s first team when he was 16 against Port Talbot Town and also claimed a Wales U17 cap against Scotland in 2012.

Davies commented: “It’s a great honour to be asked to come and join the champions. There’s going to be a lot riding on next year to back it up and I’m excited about that.”

Manager Morrison added: “We’re delighted to sign Danny – he’s a young player who, I believe, has the qualities to make a major impact at Connah’s Quay Nomads and in the JD Cymru Premier.”

Full-timers Lewis Brass, Callum Roberts, Kris Owens and Sameron Dool have already signed fresh deals for the Nomads this summer, with Danny Holmes and James Owen also agreeing to contract extensions this week.

Last season’s top scorer, Jamie Insall, has also penned a new one-year contract with the Deesiders.

Ex-Ross County, Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United forward Craig Curran has agreed to stay on for another two years, as has assistant-manager and former record-breaking TNS boss Craig Harrison.

Nomads announced the signing of 32 year old midfielder, Aeron Edwards, from The New Saints last month.
