Caernarfon Town’s new goalkeeper Josh Tibbetts admits he cannot wait to get acquainted with the famous Cofi Army.

The Canaries are the best supported club in the Cymru Premier by some distance and they always reserve a special welcome for new players.

Last season, Tibbetts played for Bala Town, and recalls his visit to Caernarfon as “interesting” with “a lot of banter with the fans”.

Tibbetts joins the Cofis just days after last season’s Caernarfon No 1 Alex Ramsay went the other way and signed for Bala.

The 21-year-old Tibbetts dislodged Ashley Morris from the regular keeper’s spot at Maes Tegid last term and went on to qualify for Europe with the Lakesiders.

He now wants to repeat the feat with Caernarfon, who were robbed of a potential place in European competition when the 2019-20 season was brought to a sudden halt by the FAW due to coronavirus.

The Canaries could have sealed a Europa League spot through their final WPL position, the play-offs or the Welsh Cup, where they had made the semi-finals.

At the time the season was cancelled, Caernarfon were fifth in the Cymru Premier, while the Welsh Cup was postponed.

The national cup competition could be completed at a later date, but not before the Europa League deadline.

In an interview with Caernarfon Town chairman Paul Evans today, Tibbets said he had no hesitation when given the opportunity to move to The Oval.

“I had some good times there (Caernarfon) last season – there was a great atmosphere there.

“It’s a club that is surrounded by fans, they love football there, it was almost like a no-brainer for myself to get it done.

“There’s so much promise in that team for next season; they were so close to getting into Europe last time. Had the season carried on and played out there’s a good chance Caernarfon would have got European football.”

The former Peterborough United keeper added: “I’ve got a point to prove. I’m the type of person who loves interaction with fans. When they’re behind me they will get my 100% on the pitch. Fans are what make football tick. I’m going to make sure I’m 100% there for the team.

“Caernarfon play very good football; there’s a lot of younger lads there that are very promising, lots of pace, lot of technical ability. If the season wasn’t cut short they could have.”

Asked what his hopes are for next season, Tibbetts added: “Hopefully I can help get the club in that European place and get that first Welsh Cup.

“When I’m on the pitch you’ll always get 100% from myself. The main aim will be to hit the ground running and get that European spot for next season.”

West Midlander Tibbetts was with Birmingham City from the ages of 8 to 18. A ruptured ACL held back his progress before he signed for Football League club Peterborough United in May 2017.

While with The Posh, he had loan spells at Royston Town and Solihull Moors.

He left Peterborough in October 2018 to sign for Southport, then the following summer had his first taste of the Welsh Premier with Bala.

Now comes the next chapter of his career with Caernarfon Town.
