All hail the magnificent seven – the unbeaten teams

We are heading into late February and still seven teams in North Wales senior football are unbeaten in their respective leagues.

Can any of them ‘do an Arsenal’ and finish up invincibles of the 2019-20 campaign?

It will take some doing, but it can definitely be done.

Here are the magnificent seven.

Holywell Town – Welsh National League Premier Division
Played 14 Won 12 Drawn 2 Goals for 56 Goals against 6

After last season’s relegation from the Cymru North, Johnny Haseldin faced a major squad rebuild this term and he’s done a fantastic job.
To go 14 matches unbeaten since the big kick-off in August is impressive enough, but to concede just six goals over that spell is downright remarkable.
Many big tests still to come for the Wellmen in what is a cracking division, but they have performed marvels so far.

Bangor 1876 – Gwynedd League
Played 16 Won 16 Goals for 115 Goals against 9

Ten points clear at the peak, newly-formed 1876 need to go undefeated for another 12 matches to make it an ‘invincible’ season.
With two games against Menai Bridge, a particularly tough trip to Nefyn and a meeting with Trearddur Bay Bulls still to come, the fan-owned club still have a succession of hurdles to overcome.
It’s been said in some bitter circles that 1876 have an ‘unfair advantage’ in the quality of players they possess.
That’s rubbish. It is a squad of largely local lads, with the exception of Michael Johnston, who has played in North Wales for so long he is pretty much one of us anyway – and he has been capped for Wales.
The likes of Les Davies and Jamie Petrie are well into their 30s and the rest are all young talents from the Bangor, Caernarfon, Anglesey, Llyn areas.
1876 did not ask to be put in the Gwynedd League, they were placed there, and I would not say they represent a mismatch in the fifth-tier as they have already been given close, tough battles by Nefyn and Trearddur Bay.
Perhaps Welsh Alliance is more their level, and they have beaten teams from that league in cups this season, but they also lost quite emphatically to Llanrwst.

Rhuddlan Town – Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division
Played 14 Won 12 Drawn 2 Goals for 66 Goals against 21

From day one, Rhuddlan have hit the ground running and deserve major credit for going unbeaten in 14 matches in what is a very good standard Premier Division.
Wayne Hughes’ side have always found ways to win, achieving a mixture of results with emphatic victories combined with narrow, but vital triumphs.
Still some big tests to come for Town, but to hold a nine-point lead with 66 goals netted in 14 games is highly impressive.

Bangor City Reserves – Welsh Alliance League Reserves Division
Played 10 Won 9 Drawn 1 Goals for 51 Goals against 10

Having only dropped two points all season, City are very handily placed in second spot in the Reserves Division.
They have benefited, though, from playing a number of midweek fixtures where first team players were drafted in.

Llysfaen – Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One
Played 11 Won 9 Drawn 2 Goals For 64 Goals Against 14

Definitely one of the teams of the season in North Wales so far, Llysfaen are yet to lose in any competition.
Emlyn Robert Jones’ side have piled in the goals and deservedly hold top spot in Division One in what has been their finest campaign to date.
With both the top pair, Llysfaen and NFA still unbeaten in Division One, it will be interesting to see how the stats read after they have played each other.

NFA – Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One
Played 11 Won 9 Drawn 2 Goals for 52 Goals against 21

Brilliant debut season across the board for this flourishing newly-formed Rhyl club.
The men’s NFA team have been magnificent, still undefeated in the league and with a couple of crackers against fellow high-flyers Llysfaen still to come.
NFA have also beaten teams from a higher level in the domestic cups and in Jordan Taylor have a phenomenal marksman with 33 goals in all competitions.

Caerwys Vets – North East Wales League Veterans Premier Division
Played 8 Won 7 Drawn 1 Goals for 37 Goals against 15

I’m including Vets football as this division is part of the North East Wales League.
Unbeaten in eight and five points clear at the Premier Division summit, Caerwys have performed magnificently so far, but still have some tough tests to come and will do well to complete the campaign without a loss.
Great to see some names in their squad whom I have known and reported on for years.
