Seven straight victories, great Welsh Cup draw – things look good for Colwyn Bay

Seven straight victories in all competitions, third in the Cymru North, into the last 32 of the Welsh Cup and showing an ability to win pretty and ugly – things are looking good for Colwyn Bay FC.

Denied a chance to make it eight victories on the bounce when last night’s league tussle with Conwy Borough was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Llanelian Road, the Seagulls are nonetheless flying.

Earlier this week there was more good news for the Bay when they were drawn at home to Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK in the third round of the Welsh Cup.

The tie will be played on the weekend of December 7, with a place in the last 16 at stake.

Manager Craig Hogg welcomes the opportunity to host a top-flight side in what is Bay’s first appearance in the national knockout since 1991/92, when they reached the semi-finals only to lose 4-2 over two legs to Hednesford Town.

“It is a tough draw, but one we will looking forward to,” said Hogg, who has just been voted JD Cymru North Manager of the Month for October.

“Airbus are a good side and pretty much walked the Cymru Alliance last season. They have a top group of players and a really good management team, so we know it is going to be a big ask for us.

“From the outset we hoped for a home draw because it has been some time since we had one and it will be a big occasion for the fans who we expect to turn up in numbers.

“If we get a thousand or so people through the gates I don’t think it would surprise me at all.”

The Bay progressed in the competition with a 1-0 win at Nantlle Vale last weekend thanks to a screamer of a winning goal from Julian Williams on 76 minutes.

That made it seven consecutive wins Hogg’s men, who are next in action this Saturday away to Buckley Town.

Hogg added: “The cup game is not until December so the focus now has to be fully on the league games we have beforehand – and it will be.”
