Blacks v Slim: Clash of the Cofis at Market Mayhem draws ever closer

Looking the part: Hard training has paid dividends for Alan Mark Roberts (Slim)

Caernarfon is bracing itself for the town’s sporting showdown of the year.

Alan Mark Owen and Alan Mark Roberts – better known as Blacks and Slim – will fight on Saturday night for the Market Mayhem heavyweight kickboxing title on a show packed with quality fights.

Top of the bill will be the Clash of the Cofis between WUMA Welsh heavyweight kickboxing champion Blacks and former holder of that title Roberts.

Both combatants have 4-0 records, so on the night somebody’s 0 has to go.

Blacks, 27, was in action just a fortnight ago, recording a third round stoppage against Dan Pritchard in a Welsh Combat League boxing bout in Llandudno.

Roberts, 35, last fought in April, scoring a one round knockout at another Market Mayhem event.

Former Caernarfon RFC player Roberts is trained by the highly-respected Chris Pritchard, while Blacks is under the tutelage of Marvin Pritchard of Porthmadog’s MPMA martial arts centre.

In recent months Roberts has been working abroad, so Chris Pritchard has not been involved in his training.

However, Chris reports his fighter is shaping up well ahead of the big night and provided photos of Slim’s ever-improving body shape in the build up to the bout.

“He seems to be in great shape,” he said. “I’m not sure how his training has been as he’s not trained with me this time. He trained away in Norway, but I spoke to him yesterday and he’s pumped.”

Blacks, who plays football for Welsh Alliance club Llanrug United, announced recently he will have three more fights before retiring.

He beat Dan Pritchard in the first, Slim will be his second opponent, and he will close out his career in a meeting with Robert Ben Humphries of Porthmadog next month.

Saturday’s show at the Market Hall in Caernarfon is expected to be a sellout.

Today it was announced that Blacks’ trainer Marvin Pritchard, the UFN British Kickboxing 80kg champion, will also feature on Saturday’s card against an opponent to be confirmed.
