Porthmadog boxers do town proud on UBC show at Birkenhead

A victorious Ben Humphreys after winning the UBC heavyweight belt.

Porthmadog fighter Robert Ben Humphreys overcame a dislocated ankle to win the UBC heavyweight title on a thrilling show in Birkenhead.

The 31-year-old defeated a very experienced opponent with more than 100 fights on his record by a second round stoppage.

Representing Porthmadog Boxing Club on the Battle of the Mersey Show in New Ferry, Humphreys troubled his opponent with fierce blows from the start, scoring a knock down with a crunching left hook at the end of the first.

It was not long before more power punches from Humphreys took their toll in round two, the referee waving the fight off with the opponent on his knees and well beaten.

A great night for Porthmadog BC featured four wins out of five contests.

Iwan Llywelyn

Osian Jones won via a first round KO, debutant Iwan Llywelyn was victorious on a second round KO and Huw Parry bounced back from a loss with a fine win.

Leon Evans, in his first outing, lost but had missed out on a lot of training having contracted Covid a few weeks before.

Leon fought with tremendous heart and his coach Cafan Humphreys was extremely proud of his performance.

Huw Parry, Deio Roberts and Osian Jones

Deio Roberts got a draw. Porthmadog BC thanks Deio for all he does for the club, always helping to improve others.

After his bout, a delighted Ben Humphreys said: “All the lads would like to thanks Cafan for the work he put in preparing us all for the fights.

“We would also like to thank all the sponsors for helping them make training and fighting possible.”

Leon Evans showed tremendous heart

Ben had suffered an ankle injury a few days before his fight, but battled through the pain barrier to record another great win.

This was his first outing since the pandemic wiped out Welsh sport in March 2020.

Ben will feature next on the Fight Night Round 3 Ryan Mac show at Y Clwb, Glan Conwy, on August 21.

Still unbeaten, Ben won the WUMA heavyweight title two years ago after beating champion and the previously undefeated Alan Blacks of Caernarfon on a points decision in Criccieth.

His brothers, Cafan and Wayne, are also title-winning fighters. Team Humphreys is a massive part of North Wales boxing and MMA.
