Welsh National League: Mold thrash leaders, Brymbo go top, amazing Llay comeback, first win for Holywell

Holywell Town picked up their first win in the WNL Premier Division with a 5-2 victory at Cefn Albion.

As the home side won the FAW Trophy last season, the Wellmen gave Albion a guard of honour as they took to the field in honour of their achievement.

Town opened the better side and Shaun Tuck twice forced good stops out of home keeper Joshua Roberts.

At the other end, Jordan Williams’ shot was inches wide of Mike Platt’s post. After Keiran Price was brought down on the edge of the box, Holywell’s Mark Connolly saw his free kick saved by Roberts.

The visitors took the lead on 16 minutes. A good ball to Tuck on the edge of the box saw him control and unleash a shot which beat Roberts.

Town received a let-off as Cefn’s James Jones’ looping shot came back out off the crossbar, but soon after Kien Morris fired the home side level to make the scores all-square at the break.

The second half was barely a few minutes old when Albion took the lead, Zac Davies breaking forward to shoot past Platt.

Town looked for the equaliser and when Tuck was brought down in the area, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, and up stepped James Graham to make it 2-2.

Midway through the half, the Wellmen regained the lead. A great move saw Connolly pass the ball out to Luke Edwards on the edge of the box, his cross was pushed onto the post by the keeper and was partially cleared to Lee Butterworth, who controlled, ran to the byline and centred for Tuck to tap home his second.

Cefn very nearly equalised shortly afterwards as Andrew Watkins’ fierce drive smashed against the crossbar and bounced down, but the ball did not cross the line and was cleared to safety.

Late goals from Paul Williams and Connolly settled the argument.

Rest of the Premier Division action

Mold Alexandra thrashed leaders Queen’s Park 5-1 to maintain their 100% record and move into second place.

Danny Warren, Matty Lewis, Ben Howarth, Dave Bryan and Adam Renshaw shared the home goals, Tristan Wagner replying.

Brymbo are the new table-toppers after Jamie Cumming’s 86th minute net-finder proved enough to edge past Chirk AAA 1-0.

Llay Welfare were delighted after coming away from Saltney Town with a 3-2 success.

Rhys Lloyd, Tom Wells and George Finlay ensured Mike Gadie’s side battled back from 2-0 down to claim all three points.

A Luke Taylor own goal in the third minute and Jack Roberts’ strike on 27 had earlier put the Bordermen in seeming command.
