Triple success for Porthmadog’s Humphreys brothers on Derby boxing show

There was a treble success for the fighting Humphreys brothers from Porthmadog on a thrill-packed boxing show in Derby on Saturday night.

Cafan, Wayne and Ben were all winners on the Pride or Glory event, where five members of the Llyn-based MPMA camp competed.

Undefeated Cafan, 29, the Universal Boxing Alliance British Heavyweight champion, took to the ring first and won via TKO in the second round of his contest against Ben Jennings.

It was a non-stop punching display from Cafan, who was well on top when the referee stepped in.

Ben won via decision in his three-round bout versus Aaron Cole.

Trainer Marvin Pritchard said: “The plan for Ben was to go all out for one round and go for the knockout. We knew that Ben’s fitness/training has not been good over the last six weeks, but it goes to show the heart and determination of this man that he went three rounds at a high pace and took the decision.”

Wayne, the Welsh UBA heavyweight champion, took on a big, strong-looking opponent in Derby, but went out from the first bell all guns blazing, let his hands go and was declared victorious after one minute and 37 seconds.

Martin Williams of MPMA, who faced a long delay before his fight, looked unlucky to lose a decision.

Trainer Marvin said: “Both men were going at it and it was very close and hard to call who was winning. I had it 1-1 going into the third round, then with only 45 seconds to go Martin’s opponent suffered a torn bicep.

“He had a couple of seconds to recover and the fight was back on.”

Gethin Jones put up a brilliant effort in his battle against a home-based fighter.

Jones ended up boxing in the main event, but had waited more than seven hours to get between the ropes. Team MPMA had been in the venue since 5pm, but Gethin did not step into the ring until 12.20am.

Marvin reported: “Both men looked very good, moving good, slipping and ducking under each other’s punches. It was very close. I had Gethin down on the first round and up on the second. Going to the third round it was a good pace and I would have called it a draw, but the decision went to the home boy.

“Since Gethin has been with me he has only faced very hard opponents, so it goes to show the heart of this man. Very proud of you mate.”

Marvin added: “Massive thanks to all the supporters for coming down and cheering us on.”

MPMA fighters now look forward to the Battle of the Island show on October 12, at Shell Island, Llanbedr, Gwynedd, where Cafan and Wayne will defend their titles.
