North Wales fighters ready to rumble at weekend boxing show

Six boxers from the champion-packed MPMA camp in Porthmadog will represent Wales on a top show in England this weekend.

Cafan Humphreys, Martin Williams, Wayne Humphreys, Ben Humphreys, Gethin Jones and Jordan Bell will all fly the Red Dragon flag on the much-anticipated Pride of Glory event in Derby on Saturday, July 13.

Inspire Championship Boxing (ICB) are staging the event at which six Welsh wins will be the target for the team coached by British kickboxing champion and martial arts expert Marvin Pritchard.

Both Cafan and Wayne are now national champions, bringing the total at the MPMA gym to four, alongside Pritchard himself and Welsh Heavyweight kickboxing title holder Alan Blacks.

Cafan landed the British Heavyweight crown on the recent Universal Boxing Alliance championship show at the Tivoli in Buckley.

The Porthmadog man, 29, defeated Jack Godfrey from Derby, who was vastly more experienced in terms of contests and four years younger.

Wayne, 33, also from Port, won the Welsh UBA heavyweight belt on the same show, beating undefeated Martin Jones.

Marvin is 80kg British and Welsh kickboxing champion. He was also title-holder at 70kg, but the title became vacant as he was unable to get back down into the category.

Alan Blacks and Alan Mark Roberts are set to tee off in a Caernarfon derby at heavyweight later on the Market Mayhem show on September 28.

Blacks, 25, was crowned the WUMA Welsh Heavyweight kickboxing earlier this year – a title previously held by Roberts, 35, back in 2012.

Marvin said he could not be more proud of the fact his camp now houses four national champions.

“I can’t express how extremely proud I am of these guys/our MPMA Camp,” he said. “We now have four champions at the MPMA Camp.

“I put this success down to dedication, hard graft, focus, indomitable spirit, self control, listening and taking on board what I say, turning up even when they don’t want to, learning to work together as a team and the most important thing that all martial artists live by and preach – respect!

“I started this journey with only one in the camp (that was me). In our second camp we had 5 people, third we had 14, and in our last camp my mind was blown away with 19 students competing. I can’t express how much pride I have and how proud I am of each and every student.”

Looking further ahead, MPMA will also be well represented at the Battle of the Island show on October 12, at Shell Island, Llanbedr, Gwynedd.

Cafan Humphreys will put his British Heavyweight belt on the line against Barry Fielding, Wayne Humphreys defends his UBA Welsh Heavyweight title against Derwyn Brooks and there will be a battle between champion Paul Thomas and challenger Guto Davies for the UBA Welsh Cruiserweight championship.

Ben Humphreys, Martin Williams, Gethin Jones and…..last but certainly not least…Marvin Pritchard will also take to the ring.
