North Wales Boxing brothers open own gym

Cafan Humphreys

Three boxing brothers from North Wales have opened their own gym.

Wayne, Cafan and Ben Humphreys have started up Mad-Dogs gym, in Hill Street, Porthmadog, which is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

For youngsters aged 5 to 11, sessions are held between 6 pm and 6.45 pm, then it’s time for the adults to go through their paces from 7 pm onwards.

Cafan, 29, is the Universal Boxing Alliance British Heavyweight champion, while Wayne holds the Welsh UBA heavyweight title.

“At only £3.50 a session we are the cheapest gym around,” said Cafan. “We are not doing it for the money, but just want to give something back to the community that has supported us through our fights.”

The gym is based in the old hall behind The Ship in Porthmadog. For more information contact Cafan on 07984 790839.

Next month the Humphreys brothers will all be competing on the Battle of the Island show at Shell Island, Llanbedr, Gwynedd.

Cafan will defend his British title against Holyhead’s Barry Fielding, while Wayne puts his Welsh belt on the line versus Derwyn Brooks.

Champion Paul Thomas will take on challenger Guto Davies for the UBA Welsh Cruiserweight crown.

Also on the bill will be Ben Humphreys, Clive Summers, Ieuan Brooks, Martin Williams, Amy Kerrigan, Jon Foligno, Marvin Pritchard, Jason Jones and Gethin Jones. For tickets, contact the fighters on Facebook.

Cafan and Ben have also been selected to represent Wales at the World United Martial Arts Championships in Greece – another boost for the fighting Humphreys family.

In their most recent outings, Cafan, Wayne and Ben were all winners on the Pride or Glory event in Derby.

Undefeated Cafan won via TKO in the second round of his contest against Ben Jennings.

Ben won via decision in his three-round bout versus Aaron Cole and Wayne took on a big, strong-looking opponent, but went out from the first bell all guns blazing, let his hands go and was declared victorious after one minute and 37 seconds.

Local lads Gethin Jones and Martin Williams were unfortunate to lose on points.
