A magnificent ton from skipper Sion Morris proved not quite enough to earn Bay what would have been an epic victory at Formby.
The North Wales visitors, chasing an unlikely 260 for the win, finished just seven runs short of their target.
Formby won the toss and batted, amassing 259-4 declared off 49 overs, with former Zimbabwe Test captain Tatenda Taibu hitting an unbeaten 144 off 156 balls, including nine fours and six maximums.
Adam Campion grabbed 2-71 for the visitors, while Sri Lankan Saliya Saman Seewantha bowled a good spell of 1-34 off 10 overs.
Colwyn’s batting has generally not fired all season, and at 78-3 they looked in trouble, but then Morris and Campion turned the tide with a partnership of 163 for the fourth wicket.
Campion went for 76, but while Morris remained victory looked a good bet. Unfortunately, the long-serving captain fell for 109, leaving Bay 246-6, and the final total was 253-7 off 55 overs.
Elliot Ketteringham struck vital blows in removing Campion and Morris, and finished with 3-15 as Formby got the better of an 8-7 draw.
In-form Hall looked to be on course for a magnificent victory at the leaders before an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 62 led Newton to glory.
The Flintshire visitors called the coin correctly and batted, but finished up 138 all out, Joshua Andrady heading the batting chart with 46, Jamie Hodgson adding 29 and Enamul Haque Jr 24, while Sam Guest scooped 5-42 for the hosts.
In reply, Newton were reduced to 77-7 as James Hurlin and Haque Jr wreaked havoc, but Mike Walkden (40 no) and Matthew Hurst (22 no) turned the tables, leading the hosts to a three-wicket triumph.
Hurlin grabbed 4-55 and Haque Jr 3-50 for the unfortunate Welsh visitors.
No joy for Prestatyn as they crashed to a 110-run defeat at Wigan.
The home side posted 225-5 declared off 50 overs, Charles Taylor (80) and John Richardson (58) laying strong foundations with an opening stand of 137.
Kieron Tidswell picked up 2-65 for the visitors, who were then dismissed for just 115, Gareth Leonard best at 39.
Colwyn Bay (7) 183-10 (Ross Hudson 34)
