Caernarfon Town add Gruff John Williams and Sam Jones to their squad

Caernarfon Town assistant-manager Sean Eardley has announced two exciting new signings for the 2019-20 season.

The versatile Gruff John Williams arrives at The Oval from Porthmadog, while striker Sam Jones switches from Bangor City to the Canaries.

Williams, 25, first played for Porthmadog in 2012, having signed from Llanrug United. 

A genuine utility player, he is equally at home anywhere along the back four or in midfield. Cool under pressure, strong going forward and a dangerous free kick specialist, Williams has gained Wales caps at U-18 Schools level. 

He has a degree in sport, health and physical education from Bangor University.

“Gruff brings us a lot of versatility and is really eager to go,” said Eardley. “He wants to prove a point at this level; he’s very consistent and offers a lot of versatility, being able to slot in anywhere across the back four or in midfield.”

Jones, 19, began his career at Menai Bridge Tigers before moving to Bangor City. He was promoted to City’s first team squad during the 2017-18 season after scoring prolifically for the U19 side. 

The thrilling talent came on in leaps and bounds for the firsts in the Huws Gray Alliance last term, netting seven goals.

Eardley added: “Sam plays with absolutely no fear. Like many young lads, he was thrown in at the deep end for Bangor last season and did superbly well. He’s an absolute pest (on the pitch) really, so difficult to deal with.

“We’ve made two very good additions which will add to the competition for places.”

With defender Mike Pearson already having signed for Caernarfon, that makes three new faces so far for the Welsh Premier club, but Eardley assures there will be more.

Town finished a magnificent fourth on their return to the top flight this season.

“Our aim is to erase second season syndrome as quickly as possible,” he added.
