Fantastic news – all systems go for Holyhead Hotspur women’s football team!

Holyhead Hotspur women’s squad and coaches

Holyhead Hotspur will enter a senior women’s team in league football for the first time in the club’s history next season.

With Amlwch Town also on the comeback trail after a season’s absence and Llangefni Town winning the North Wales Coast League title at the weekend, Hotspur’s news serves a a triple whammy for women’s football on Ynys Môn.

Hotspur will be competing in Tier 3 of North Wales women’s football in 2026-27 — a huge milestone in the journey of a club which formed in 1990.

This achievement marks the culmination of four years of dedication and development led by manager Matt Thomas and his coaching team.

What began as a small initiative after Matt’s daughter developed an interest in football at just 13 years old has grown into a thriving and structured pathway for girls’ football within the club.

Starting with just seven players training weekly at U15 level, the club has rapidly expanded. Today, Holyhead Hotspur proudly supports over 100 girls across multiple age groups, including U11s, U13s, U15s, U16s, and U17s — all enjoying and developing in the game.

Matt, who also coaches the club’s U13 boys and U16/17 girls, has played a key role in building this foundation, with strong backing from the club throughout.

A senior women’s committee is now firmly in place, alongside a committed coaching setup. Assistant manager and former club captain Thomas Nathan Edwards brings invaluable experience and shares the same ambition and vision for the team’s future.

The talent within the squad is already showing promise, with several U16 and U17 players having represented the Ynys Môn Island Games side in friendlies last summer.

Holyhead has previously been represented by Cybi Women, but this is the first senior side launched by the town’s premier club Hotspur.

Speaking on the club’s progress, Matt said: “I’ve had a dream for four years to bring women’s football to Holyhead Hotspur. The club has a brilliant history of success, and I want to bring that to the women’s side.

“The girls are raring to go. I’d like to bring in some senior players to balance the squad, but the players we have are more than capable of pushing for the Tier 3 title next season. I’m confident in what we’ve built and cannot wait to see them compete in the league.”

The team is fully supported both on and off the pitch, with a dedicated coaching staff, first aid provision, and a strong committee structure. Sponsorship for home, away, and training kits is already secured — a testament to the growing support from the local community.

Holyhead Hotspur Women are now looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
