Seven-goal thriller ends in heartbreak for Nefyn at Cae Sling

In a chaotic, high-intensity encounter at Cae Sling, CPD Unedig Nefyn suffered their first defeat of the league campaign, falling 4-3 to Penmaenmawr Phoenix.
Despite building a two-goal lead and showing immense resilience to retake the advantage in the second half, the Penwaig were ultimately undone by a ferocious Phoenix fightback.
Nefyn could not have asked for a better start to their first away outing in Tier 3. In just the 5th minute, battling work down the flank from Rhys Williams opened up the hosts backline, allowing Zak Pike to sweep home the opener.
The Penwaig doubled their lead in the 36th minute through a moment of clinical composure. Turning provider, Pike played a pinpoint pass into the path of Tomi Jones-Evans, who made no mistake in calmly slotting the ball past the keeper for 2-0.
The match unravelled into controversy shortly before the interval. Steffan Toplis appeared to break clean through the Phoenix defense, only to be incorrectly flagged offside despite starting his run well inside his own half. The tension boiled over at the half time whistle when two Penmaenmawr players engaged in an on-pitch physical altercation—an incident that surprisingly went unpunished by the match officials.
A fiery and aggressive Phoenix side emerged for the second period, catching Nefyn off guard with a rapid-fire double. Matthew Robinson halved the deficit in the 48th minute, before Logan Williams leveled the contest at 2-2 with a long-range effort in the 51st.
Nefyn’s response was immediate. Just three minutes later, Pike pounced on a poor clearance to unleash a long-range strike into the net, restoring the away lead at 3-2 with his second goal of the afternoon.
However, the momentum swung decisively back to the hosts midway through the half. two-goal hero Anthony Marshall brought Phoenix level once more in the 67th minute, before tapping home from a goalmouth scramble just two minutes later to give Penmaenmawr their first lead of the match.
Nefyn threw everything forward in search of an equalizer. The Penwaig hit the woodwork twice in the 2nd half and saw multiple goalmouth scrambles cleared with some last ditch defending. The decisive final touch remained agonizingly out of reach.
It is a bitter pill to swallow for a side that led for large parts of the match and created enough chances to take all three points. However, away days in Tier 3 bring new physical and mental demands, and valuable lessons will be absorbed from this seven-goal battle. All focus now shifts to next Sunday as Nefyn return home to Cae’r Delyn to host Kinmel Bay.

CPD Unedig Nefyn announced their arrival in the division with a resounding 4-1 victory over last season’s 5th-placed finishers, Bethesda Athletic.
Despite a delayed 7pm kickoff and an early setback, the Penwaig shook off initial nerves to deliver a ruthless, four-goal display that left the visitors with no answers.
The match began under unusual circumstances following a delayed kick-off to accommodate Bethesda’s scheduling request. Nefyn appeared caught cold in the opening exchanges, and Benn Lundstram capitalized on a tentative start by the hosts to put the visitors ahead in just the 4th minute.
The early lead proved short-lived as Player of the Match Deio Rhys Jones took control of the contest. Building on his growing reputation as the engine room of this side, Jones collected a pass from Steffan Toplis and unleashed a 30+ yard thunderbolt that flew into the net to restore parity and spark Cae’r Delyn into life.
With momentum fully shifted, Nefyn pushed for the lead before the break. Superb buildup play by Rhys Williams opened up the Bethesda rearguard, allowing Tomi Jones-Evans to unselfishly tee up Zak Pike. The summer signing made no mistake, applying a clinical finish in the 39th minute to give Nefyn a deserved 2-1 lead at the interval.
Whatever plans Bethesda had for a second-half resurgence were blown away within four minutes of the restart. Half-time substitute Tomos Huw immediately reminded the league of his attacking potency by slotting home Nefyn’s third in the 49th minute.
Nefyn maintained total control of the tempo, before another substitution paid dividends. In the 79th minute, Noa Griffith put the finishing touches on a dominant evening, coolly dispatching Nefyn’s fourth after more exceptional play from Rhys Williams.
