Beating Guilsfield is never easy. They are constantly tricky opposition and getting three points against them is always a notable achievement.
On Tuesday night Denbigh Town managed to do just that, but it was as tough as ever.
And the reward for making it back-to-back wins is a rise up to fifth place for Dewi Llion’s side.
Gwion Dafydd’s brace and a strike from the returning Owen Davies saw Town race three goals ahead after less than half an hour, before two replies in the space of a minute brought the visitors back into the contest.
However, Denbigh held on in difficult conditions for a hugely valuable three points.
Manager Dewi Llion made three changes to the side that beat Brickfield Rangers 2-1 on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Oli Farebrother came in to make his debut, Owen Davies, back at Central Park on loan from Colwyn Bay, slotted into the line-up and Keelan Williams was named in the XI for the first time since August.
In addition, Mike Pearson, Dan Davies and Hari Roberts took a place on the bench.
Town began the game red hot taking the lead after just six minutes. A brilliant through ball from Matthew Worrall found Davies on the right inside the box and he squared to Dafydd who bundled home from close range.
On 23 minutes Town doubled the lead through Dafydd once more. Williams slipped a superb ball through to the forward before he cut inside and swept home via the far post.
Six minutes later the good start got even better when Davies marked his return with a finish of his own.
Dafydd this time turned provider when he found the forward who dispatched his chance brilliantly.
That brought Davies’ record to a highly impressive 32 goals in 52 appearances for Denbigh.
However, this was Guilsfield, a team that never gives up and whilst three to the good, the lead was reduced rapidly and clinically within seconds.
Ryan Knott and Iwan Matthews both found the net to set up a nervy end to the half.
With the rain lashing down throughout the break both sides returned to tricky conditions throughout the second period. Guilsfield edged territory but couldn’t create anything of real note.
Dan Davies was introduced for his debut just before the hour mark. New keeper Farebrother was called into action in quick succession when Adam Hailes drilled an effort from an angle which the Town custodian got down to superbly. From the resulting corner, the ex-Rhyl and Porthmadog glovesman commandingly punched clear.
As the seconds died down Town held on and recorded a massive win that shot them up into the top five, ahead of their visitors before a massive game against fourth-placed Newtown at Central Park this coming weekend.
