JD WELSH CUP ROUND FOUR – DECEMBER 13, 2025

Penybont 0
Flint Town United 0
(Flint won 4-3 on pens)

Not a classic performance from Flint in South Wales, but they certainly produced a classic result!
In the end, it came down to penalty-taking skills, and it was the Silkmen who ran out 4-3 victors in the shootout to reach the quarter-finals.
With home advantage and a higher placing in the Cymru Premier, Penybont were most people’s fancies to progress, but their task became much tougher when they had influential veteran attacker Chris Venables sent off after just seven minutes.
The 40-year-old put in what looked like a dangerous challenge on Harry Owen, although it was debatable how much contact he made with his opponent.
Nonetheless, a straight red for the league’s highest appearance-maker and third top scorer of all time, leaving Penybont up against it.
Despite this, the hosts had the better chances in the game, Nathan Wood’s right-wing cross met by a header from James Crole which forced a good save from late replacement keeper Dawid Szczepaniak.
In the second half, Crole put the keeper under pressure and robbed the ball, but had his ambitious effort from wide kept out by a relieved custodian when a pass into the middle might have been a better option.
Alexander Cvetkovic saw his powerful strike kept out by Szczepaniak, who later finger-tipped a Crole 25-yarder away for a corner.
No goals at the end of 90 minutes, so penalties were needed to determine a winner.

Late replacement keeper Dawid Szczepaniak was a key man for Flint

Kane Owen converted for Penybont, Joshua Jones did likewise for Flint, but Szczepaniak then produced a good stop from Wood.
Jack Thorn made it 2-1 Silkmen, Crole equalised, but Darren Stephenson restored the away lead.
Clayton Green made it three-apiece, then Flint suffered a setback when Jake Canavan’s kick was saved by Dan Higgs.
However, Mael Davies blasted badly over the bar, leaving Jake Phillips to step up, find the net and win the tie.
