Ardal North League Cup: Holders Porthmadog exit at first hurdle, Bangor triumph at ‘Rwst

Porthmadog 1 Trearddur Bay 3

Holders Porthmadog were beaten in their first defence of the Ardal Northern League Cup when nine-man Trearddur Bay claimed victory against the odds at Y Traeth on Saturday.
Two goals, four minutes apart midway through the first half, put the islanders in command.
On 22 minutes, an excellent cross was headed into the six-yard box, where Christoph Aziamale produced an acrobatic finish from close range.
The second goal after 26 saw a long ball from the back allow Aziamale to pounce, passing into the box for Josh Stanley, who set up Toby Jones for an easy finish.
Trearddur were looking comfortable, but late in the first half went down to 10 men when Liam Armstrong was red-carded for violent conduct. It appeared the defender, trying to shepherd the ball out of play, caught opponent Sam Reynolds with a stray elbow.
Against 10 men, Port were desperate to capitalise with an early second-half goal and a chance fell to Dan Atkins, but he shot straight at ex-Traeth keeper Paul Pritchard.

With 58 minutes on the clock, Bay were down to nine men after Harri Jones was shown red for dissent.
The Anglesey visitors now defended deep to protect what they had and were largely under the cosh for the remaining half-hour.
Several chances were created but not taken, Gruff John going closest when his effort was cleared off the line.
Bay were defending heroically until they finally conceded two minutes into stoppage time.
Gruff Ellis saw his long range effort come back off the post, Pritchard saved the rebound and a third attempt was blocked before Jonny Bravo finally netted.
Stanley was then stretchered off which meant more added time and a chance for Port to force a penalty shootout.
However, a sucker punch landed in the 102nd minute, when Port having pushed everyone up were undone by the perfect counter-attack.
Aziamale placed the ball past onrushing keeper Josh Cooke and Toby Jones was left with the simple task of tapping in to clinch the tie.

Llanrwst United 0 CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876 3

A well-deserved win for 1876 made it 13 unbeaten in all competitions since the start of the season for Michael Johnston’s side.
Corrig McGonigle scored for the 11th game in succession, Josh Carey with the assist, to give the visitors a slender interval lead.
Carey added a second-half double, scoring on 51 and 61 minutes with Tommy Creamer and Jack Smith assisting.
Bangor had defender Iolo Hughes sent off for a second yellow card after 75 minutes.

Bethesda Athletic 2 Y Felinheli 3

A great win for Felinheli put them through to the last 16.
Aled Griffith’s 36th minute goal gave the visitors an interval lead and early in the second half Byron Davis made it 2-0.
When Gruff John added a third on 80 it looked all over, but Pesda hit back through Daniel Hughes and Sion Bullock to set up a tense finish.

Cefn Albion 5 Llanrhaeadr 0

Young Thomas Broadhurst’s 40th minute goal edged Albion in front at the break before the hosts piled on the agony in the second half, sub Kien Morris adding a double, with Jimmy Jones and Alex Williams also making the scoresheet.

Connah’s Quay Town 3 CPD Pwllheli 1

Jack Jones’ 10th minute net-finder ensured Pwllheli led at the midway stage of Sunday’s tie, but second-half goals from subs Alister Randles (2) and Lewis James turned the tide in favour of Town.

Kerry 2 Knighton Town 2 (Knighton won 4-2 on penalties)

Luke Boundford’s 91st minute spot kick ensured Knighton took this tie to a penalty shoot out which the visitors won 4-2.
Michael Humphreys gave Kerry a 15th minute lead, but a Matthew Mumford own goal squared it before the changeover.
Steffan Rogers restored the Lambs’ advantage five minutes into the second half, but Boundford saved the day for Knighton.

Llandrindod Wells 0 Corwen 2

Tom Mann (21 minutes) and Calum Butler (51) supplied the goals which secured passage to the next stage for Corwen.

Llangollen Town 0 Llanfair United 1

Karl Seliaerts’ strike on the hour was sufficient to win a tight contest for Llanfair.

Llay Welfare 4 St Asaph City 0

John James King (2), David MacIntyre and Liam Collo shared the goals in an emphatic victory for Llay at The Ring.

NFA 1 Llannefydd 1 (Llannefydd won 5-4 on pens)

What was expected to be a close-fought tie ended up being exactly that, but it was visitors Llannefydd who emerged victorious 5-4 on penalties at Ffordd Derwen.
Llion Morris put the away side one-up after 34 minutes before Lewis Evans equalised on 71.

Penycae 1 Bow Street 1 (Bow Street won 4-3 on pens)

Penalties heartbreak for Penycae after a 1-1 draw.
Tomos Roberts edged Bow into a second-minute lead before Ryan Dacey restored parity with 37 gone.
In the second half, Penycae manager Jack Ellis (85 mins) and Thomas Edwards (87) were both shown red cards before the travellers advanced via spot-kicks.

Radnor Valley 1 Llanuwchllyn 3

Meilir Williams (2, 1 pen) and Will Owen banked the victory for Llanuwchllyn after Jack Clarke had struck first on 15 minutes for Radnor.
The final score was identical to the league game between this pair seven days earlier at the same venue.

CPD Rhos Aelwyd 1 Builth Wells 0

Sub Osian Phillips delivered the 86th minute goal which proved enough to send Aelwyd through to the last 16.
