Eagles has landed with a two-goal salvo on her Flint debut – including a last-gasp winner!

Great start for Flint and their new sensation Becca Eagles (front row – furthest right)

GENERO ADRAN TROPHY GROUP 4

Flint Town United 3 (Eagles 6 & 92, Rosie Hughes 49)
Llanfair United 2 (S Roberts 29, Cook 79)

Becca Eagles had a debut to remember for Flint as she found the net twice – including the 92nd minute winner – to sink last season’s Adran North runners-up Llanfair at the Essity Stadium.

The Silkwomen beat the Powys outfit 4-3 in the opening Adran Trophy group clash of last term and the black and whites repeated the dose on Sunday.

Midfield dynamo Eagles, who recently joined Flint from the disbanded CPD Y Rhyl 1879, is known as a free-kick specialist and she showed why after just six minutes.

The 26-year-old let fly from outside the box and the ball flew in over hapless Llanfair keeper Ffion Davies.

Llanfair equalised on 29 minutes, Hannah Lloyd with the assist and Sioned Roberts applying the finish. It stayed 1-1 up to half time.

Four minutes into the second half the home team were back in front when Rosie Hughes’ inswinging corner ended up in the net off a Llanfair deflection.

The visitors rallied but it was not until the 79th minute that Sophie Cook managed to level the scores.

It was anyone’s game now, but Flint clinched it two minutes over the 90.

Taylia Chaloner crossed in to Eagles, who controlled on the edge of the box, beat a defender and left-footed found the top right of the net to send the home supporters wild.

It was a great way to start the season for Flint, who were missing some key players, including record goalscorer Zoe Stopford.

Seventeen-year-old Beth Roberts, who joined the Silkwomen this summer after netting 53 goals for Henllan last season, was heavily marked as the lone striker but put in a great shift and will benefit from the return of Stopford playing alongside her.

Delighted Flint captain Ruby McGilloway said: “It was a nice way to start the season with 3 points in the Adran Trophy. We felt it wasn’t our strongest performance but kept going until the last second which got us the win. Interesting to see close scores in the other games too so we are looking forward to getting going with the season ahead now.”
