CRICKET: North Wales League Divisions 2-4 – Shock defeats for Division 2 and 4 leaders

NORTH WALES CRICKET LEAGUE REPORTS DIVISIONS 2, 3 AND 4 – JUNE 14

Two unbeaten records were shattered on Saturday – Division Two leaders Corwen and Mynydd Isa and Maeshafn, top of Division Four, both suffered their first defeats of 2025.

DIVISION TWO

Corwen (4) 111-10 Marchwiel and Wrexham (11) 117-9

After restricting Marchwiel and Wrexham to 117-9 off 40 overs, Corwen must have thought they were on course for another victory – but there was a shock in store for the unbeaten leaders.

Asked to bat, the visitors could only manage a very modest total, skipper Sam Shoemark and Darshana Sanjeewa their best contributors with 28 apiece, Will Roberts grabbing 3-17 for the hosts, Caleb Dyke 2-20, Steff Lloyd 2-26 and Simon Harrison 2-32.

In reply, Corwen crashed to 13-3 and 49-7 before Iwan Lloyd (46 not out) and tail-ender Dyke gave them late hope, but the home innings closed on 111, sealing the Wrexham side a surprise victory.

Scott Lawrenson notched 3-26 for the away side and there was also 2-21 for Muhammad Ghufran, who recorded three run outs.

Carmel & District (15) 223-7 Pontblyddyn 2nd XI (0) 78-10

Supun Eranga scored 100 exactly as Carmel celebrated a maximum points triumph over Pont seconds at Pen-y-Gelli.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts chalked up 223-7 from 40 overs, Eranga’s ton, which included 13 fours and two sixes, well supported by fellow opener Ben Sim (45) and Maneesha Ayomal Nissanka (33), Seb Jackson 3-38 for the visitors.

Despite the usual dogged resistance from skipper Dave Evans (46), Pont seconds were bowled out for 78, Amer Jamil a wonderful 5-13 off eight overs, Nissanka 2-16.

Pwllheli (4) 153-10 Abergele (11) 162-6

Gwil Lloyd Jones hit a half-century for Abergele

Gwil Lloyd Jones (56), Luke Holmes (46 not out) and David Moulson (35) helped Abergele set a winning 162-6 at Parc Bodegroes, Iwan Moore 3-25 and Ioan Roberts 2-43 for the hosts.

Lloyd Jones and Moulson put on 87 for the second wicket.

In response, Pwllheli gave it a real go, but finshed up bowled out for 153, Mohsin Khan 59, Edward Rooney gathering 4-23 and Nathan Aldridge 2-22 for Gele.

Ruthin (4) 135-10 Menai Bridge 2nd XI (11) 142-10

Close one at the Memorial Fields, where Menai Bridge seconds were all out for 142, Samuel Bixby 42, Andrew Wannop 37 not out and Luke Robinson 31, Simon Williams 3-12 and Osian Roberts 3-19 for Ruthin, who were dismissed in reply for 135.

Osian Roberts led Ruthin’s charge with 51, while for the Bridge, Bixby bagged 4-19, Sean Morris 2-19 and Phil Smith 2-22.

St Asaph 2nd XI (12) 89-7 Llanrwst 1st XI (3) 87-10

Chetan Upadhyaya and Ankush Upadhyaya took 4-10 and 3-13 respectively and Tim Cloete poached 2-22 as Saints blew away Llanrwst for just 87.

Asaph staggered to a winning 89-7 in reply, Alwyn Williams 3-11 and Aron Hughes 3-25 for the Conwy Valley travellers.

DIVISION THREE

Abergele 2nd XI (4) 92-10 Bethesda 2nd XI (11) 96-8

On a largely low-scoring Saturday, Bethesda seconds crept over the line by two wickets at Pentre Mawr.

Ashley Rowlands snared 3-27 and Sopan Patil 2-16 as Gele were all back in the hutch for 92, then Pesda replied with 96-8, Barry Roberts 3-11 and Berwyn Thomas 3-16.

Buckley 2nd XI (15) 56-1 Llandudno 2nd XI (0) 55-10

Matthew Blunden scooped 5-8 off eight as Buckley seconds rolled over Llandudno seconds for just 55 at Lane End, Harry Sprowell claiming 2-8 for the hosts, who then eased to 56-1 off 11.1, Harri Weigh 35 not out.

Denbigh 2nd XI (13) 157-4 Clwb Criced Caernarfon (2) 156-6

Leaders Denbigh seconds recorded a six-wicket triumph over Caernarfon at Ystrad Road.

The Cofis were asked to bat and posted 156-6 off 40 overs, Chris Moody 52 and Ian Morgan 40, David Kitching 4-26 for the hosts who hit back with 157-4, Andy Thomas 81 and Finlay Rooke-Hart 35, Simon Davis 3-38 for the visitors.

Gwersyllt Park 2nd XI (12) 128-10 Conwy 2nd XI (3) 94-10

Inserted by their opponents, Gwersyllt Park seconds notched a modest 128 all out, Ben Callow 3-27, Guto Davies 2-23 and Subhan Khan 2-27 for Conwy seconds, who were all removed for just 94, Bailey Davies 32, Ben Griffiths 3-9, Michael Griffiths 2-2, Graeme Bell 2-18 and Ryan McCarthy 2-21 for the home side, who won by 34 runs.

Hawarden Park 2nd XI (13) 71-5 Gresford 2nd XI (2) 68-10

Craig Wilson and Thomas Phillips both took 2-2 and Haseeb Hanif Bikya 2-11 as Hawarden demolished Gresford for just 68, then the hosts reached 71-5 for a 13-2 victory, Tom Wilson 37, Oliver Jones 2-16 and Danny Griffin 2-17 for the Wrexham side.

Mold 2nd XI (2) 185-9 Bersham (13) 236-9

Lo and behold! A big total on Saturday !

Bersham bucked a trend of low scores by amassing 236-9 off 40, Aneesh Pattali 43 for an away batting line-up where nine players made double figures, Keith Embleton 3-40 for Mold seconds, who responded with a not-too-shabby 185-9, David Graham with a match top-score of 69, Farhan Abdulla 4-39 and Salu Sebastian 3-23 for the victorious Colliers.

DIVISION FOUR

Bersham 2nd XI (12) 102-6 Brymbo 3rd XI (3) 101-10

It was a good day for Bersham CC, with their seconds defeating high-flyers Brymbo 3rds to match the achievement of their big-scoring first team’s win at Mold.

After asking the Steelmen to bat, the Colliers dismissed their opponents for just 101, Sujeesh Vazhadan snaffling 4-21 and Kiran Viswambharan 3-9.

Bibin Sunny then led the retort with 36 as Bersham reached 102-6 off 22 overs for a 12-3 triumph.

Connah’s Quay 2nd XI (14) 145-2 Mynydd Isa & Maeshafn (1) 143-8

Cole Hooson was Quay’s hero with 93 not out as table-topping Mynydd Isa and Maeshafn’s nine-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end at Central Park.

The visitors were asked to take first knock and came up with a none-too-threatening 143-8 off 40, Stuart Applewhite helping avoid a worse fate with a stoic 57, Jake Chare 3-24, Nathan Gregory 2-20 and Hooson 2-30 for the Deesiders.

Hooson’s main role was as run-scorer supreme as his wonder effort guided the hosts to 145-2 in 31 overs, Rowan Entwistle 33.

Dolgellau 2nd XI (3) Ruthin 2nd XI (3) – CANCELLED

Hawarden Park 3rd XI (14) 37-3 Pwllheli 2nd XI (1) 36-10

Bowled out for 19 seven days earlier, Pwllheli seconds did only slightly better as they were dismissed for a paltry 36 at Shotton, Myles Bennett 2-1, Robert Goodwin 2-2 and Xander Apletree 2-5 for Hawarden, who got home on 37-3, Nico Jones a spirited 3-12 for Pwll.

Llanrwst 2nd XI (3) 69-10 Carmel & District 2nd XI (12) 109-9

Carmel also celebrated a win double on Saturday with their seconds recording a 40-run success at Parc Gwydir.

Ranjith Appuhamy led the way with 51 not out as the visitors set 109-9 from 40 after choosing to bat, Daniel Jones 4-20 and Gez Jones 2-14 for the Rwsters, who were then blasted out for 69, Leon Doran a battling 31, Harry Nash 3-6 and Dafydd Timothy 2-10 off eight to reach 1,997 senior career wickets.

Marchwiel and Wrexham 2nd XI (11) 158-7 Halkyn 2nd XI (4) 141-10

Anthony Morris’ half-century proved crucial as Marchwiel and Wrexham seconds defeated Halkyn seconds by 17 runs.

Morris made 54 and Nick Husbands 39, the pair forming a second-wicket partnership of 92, Gareth Thomas snapping up 3-25 for the visitors, who were 141 all out with young opener Aaron Thomas carrying his bat in an excellent 72 not out, Zahid Sharif 3-15 and Ashok Kumar 2-21 for the Wrexham area winners.
