Which team in Anglesey League history scored the most goals in a season?

Morawelon brought goals galore to the Anglesey League between 2011-12 and 2013-14 – 315 scored in 66 games

Our feature on North Wales football invincibles gave rise to another question – which team scored the most goals in an Anglesey League season?

The long-running league, which sadly disbanded in 2019-20 having formed in the late 1890s, produced many prolific teams when it came to finding the net.

Holyhead Hotspur requested stats from their championship-winning season of 1995-96 which read: Played 26 Won 23 Drawn 3 Lost 0 Goals For 155 Goals Against 27.

We thought to ourselves, is this the highest total scored in an Anglesey League season?

The answer is NO – six teams dating back to the post World War Two years scored more.

League tables before 1946-37 are scarce.

Where goal tallies are concerned, one has to take into account the number of teams and games involved in a particular season.

The Anglesey League varied in size greatly over the decades – in its pomp, it featured up to 18 teams and one division, 34 matches played.

At other times, there were more clubs involved but they were split into separate divisions, hence reducing the amount of fixtures per side.

While the team which has netted the most goals in an Anglesey League campaign could be ranked No1, it is perhaps fairer to rate teams on goal average – the amount scored divided by the number of matches played.

Using this method, though, gives us an inconclusive answer. The Llangefni side which won Division 3B in 1948-49 is a mile in front in the GA stakes – 20 games, 166 goals, average 8.3 per match.

However, given 3B was in fact the Second Division, one might question the standard of opponent Cefni would have played week in, week out compared to others in this list.

Really, it’s up to the reader to consider who they think are the true Goal Kings of Anglesey, but here’s the top scorers from history, complete with their per game averages.

1 Newborough (1959-60) 186 goals, 30 games (goal average 6.2)

The team that scored the highest goals haul in a single Anglesey League season did not actually finish up champions!
Newborough, the chief dominant force in island football in the 1950’s and 60’s, ended in third place in 1959-60 behind Aberffraw and title winners Gwalchmai.

2 Gwalchmai (1986-87) 183 goals, 34 games (average 5.38)

This was the season the Anglesey League went totally goals crazy.
The 18 teams produced 1,603 goals between them, six netting over 100 times! It would be interesting to know who topped the player scoring chart 38 years ago.

3 Newborough (1960-61) 179 goals, 28 games (6.39)

Taking Division 3B champions in 1948-49 Llangefni out of the equation, the Newborough title winners of 1960-61 have the best goal average over a season in Anglesey League history.

4 Llanfairpwll (1974-75) 173 goals, 30 games (5.77)

5 Llandegfan (1975-76) 168 goals, 34 games (4.94)

Despite such impressive stats, Llandegfan finished second in the league this season behind Llanfairpwll.

6 Llangefni (1948-49) 166 goals, 20 games (8.3)

The highest-placed invincibles in the list as well as having the largest GA, but they were champions of the Second Division (3B).

7 Holyhead Hotspur (1995-96) 155 goals, 26 games (5.96)

Back-to-back Anglesey League titles for Hotspur in 1995/96, Chris Jenkins, Dale Fleming and Nigel Moore piling on the goals.
The Holyhead heroes are the highest-ranked invincibles in the list who won the top division (or the only division at the time).

8 Newborough (1956-57) 154 goals, 26 games (5.92)

Another entry in the top 10 for the Newborough goal machine.
However, in this season, they were runners-up behind Gwalchmai.

9 Morawelon 153 (2011-12) 153 goals, 24 games (6.38)

The most recent of the prolific island goal-baggers in the list.
Despite scoring loads more than anyone else, they finished second in the table behind Pentraeth. Second highest top-division goal average in league’s history.

10 Llanfairpwll (1975-76) 152 goals, 34 games (4.44)

Pipped Llandegfan to the title, but notched 16 goals less than the runners-up
