Women’s Play-Off: Who gets promoted? Berriew or Llangefni Town?

Promotion to Tier 2 will be on the line when the final domestic fixture of the North Wales women’s football season takes place this weekend.

Llangefni Town will meet Berriew in the North East Wales Women’s League Promotion Play-Off at Brymbo Sports and Social Complex on Sunday, May 25, kick-off 2pm.

East Division champions Berriew have already missed one opportunity to reach the Tier 2 Genero Adran North when they lost 5-2 in extra time to Pwllheli in the overall North East Wales League Play-Off Final last Sunday.

Nonetheless, the Powys-based team will get a second chance when they take on Llangefni, who finished runners-up in the West Division but qualify for the promotion play-off as Pwllheli did not apply to go up.

Both Cefni and Berriew are relatively new teams.

Town reformed in 2021-22 after a long absence from the scene, while the Rhiewsiders only joined the North East Wales League in 2023-24.

After a debut season of adjustment being a brand new team, Llangefni finished third in the North Wales League in 2022-23, then were West Division runners-up in 2023-24 and lifted the Betty Pickering Cup.

This season the Anglesey side finished in second spot again with only Pwllheli above them, as was the case the previous campaign.

Although their main goalscorer Jess Jones, who scored a remarkable 52 times in 2023-24, has missed much of the current season through a knee injury, the islanders have remained a strong outfit, with the likes of Ellie Coulson, Ffion Owen, Catrin Roberts and Hannah Owen reaching double figures in the goal stakes.

The islanders recently signed striker Milly Lowe from Stockport County and midfielder Ella Ramseyer-Bache from Aberystwyth Town.

Town also have an outstanding goalkeeper in Katie Spruce, who conceded the least number of goals in the West Division this term.

Berriew have come on in leaps and bounds this season, finishing ahead of strong teams Airbus UK Broughton, Denbigh Town and Henllan to land the East title.

Their main goal threat comes from Gemma Jones, record markswoman for Adran North club Llanfair United who has netted 30 times for the Rhiewsiders in 2024-25.

The Powys outfit offers a good balance of youth and experience and proved their ability in holding Pwllheli to 2-2 over 90 minutes at the weekend before losing in extra time.

Llangefni earned their Tier 2 women’s club licence at the first attempt, while Berriew today gained theirs on appeal.

It promises to be a good, close-fought final on Sunday.
