Luck was cruelly against Trearddur Bay in a game where they deserved at least a point against the league leaders.
Lon Isallt somehow survived a pitch inspection and the island derby went ahead on a part-mudbath.
New Bay signing Steph Lee was first to threaten with a lovely strike from the edge of the box. The ball rattled the upright before bouncing out. There were claims it had crossed the line, but the official decided no goal.
Cefni ace Ffion Owen was a joy in the middle, spraying balls into dangerous areas without a second thought, and Town’s runners looked to capitalise.
However, Trearddur’s back four of Catrin Jones, Chloe Taylor, Clare Head and Georgie Wasnidge were quick to react, and an ever-tenacious CM pairing of Erin Mulvey and Amelia Roberts chased everything in front of them.
Bay posed a threat going forward, getting close to the goal through great link up play between Abbie Manning, Lee and Jess Woods.
Llangefni took the lead on 17 minutes. A corner was swung in and met confidently by home keeper Katie Davies, who punched clear. Llangefni were first to the clearance though, and the ball was put back across the goal for Catrin George to react quickest and find the net.
Fortune was against Bay again when Woods’ shot struck the bottom of the post, the ball rolled up it and into the hands of a probably relieved Katie Spruce.
Katie Davies kept out an Owen free-kick before half time.
Trearddur were level four minutes after the break. Mulvey played a pass into the feet of Freya Davies, who fired in the equaliser.
The hosts went close again from a corner that two or three players hit towards the goal before Davies eventually put it wide on the left foot.
Llangefni soon made a double change, bringing on the lively Ffion Thomas and Jen Cox.
In the 76th minute Town were awarded a free kick for an alleged shove in the back. A well placed delivery saw the ball knocked towards goal, but Katie Davies parried it out.
Davies then slipped in what had been the puddle on the goal-line and narrowly missed the rebound. Cox was there to provide an instinctive poacher’s goal.
Bay pushed hard to equalise again but it was not to be.
Two second half goals delivered Pwllheli the win they needed to remain in the hunt for the title.
The deadlock was broken on 61 minutes after a clearance by Llan’s Natasha Matthews was picked up by Sian Moore, who took the ball to the right top corner of the box.
Moore passed to Magi Hughes on the penalty spot and she slotted home bottom left.
In the 72nd minute,, Pwll produced some good build up play from the back and found Jini Owen Hughes, who fought hard and a inspired cracking switch of play over to Charley Davies, who calmly found the net for her fourth goal in two games.
Pwllheli dominated most of the game but often struggled to find the net.
But top credit to Llanystumdwy, who fought right till the end and proved once again they are nobody’s fools these days.
