Goal controversy as Bangor claim first-ever win over Llandudno

GENERO ADRAN NORTH – JANUARY 26, 2025

Llandudno 0
CPDM Bangor 1 (A Jones 81)
Controversy surrounded Bangor’s 81st minute winning goal at Go Goodwins Stadium.
Cadi Rees-Jones’ shot was pushed onto the bar by keeper Beca Davies, who then bravely scrambled across her goal to try to keep the loose ball out.
Ashleigh Jones slid in to challenge for the ball, which ended up over the line.
A goal was given by referee Morgan Griffiths despite protests from Llandudno that their keeper had been fouled. Footage released on social media after the game showed Jones appeared to make contact with the keeper but none – or minimal – with the ball.
Not an easy decision for the official – who did not have the benefit of a replay or slow motion – to make but the goal stood.
Llandudno had won all six previous meetings with CPDM Bangor, but it was seventh time lucky for the all-blues.

A delighted Bangor manager Aron Griffith said: “Words can’t describe how well the girls played today, I’m so happy with the win, especially for the girls. They fully deserved it.
“They’ve been working hard in training this season, and now a win against a top team like Llandudno shows how far we’ve come as a team.
“The game by all means wasn’t easy as Llandudno had chances as we did, but the last 15 minutes of the game we defended with our lives on the line, the girls wanted the win so much today and i’m so proud of each one of them”.
Llandudno have now taken just two points from a possible last nine at home and their grip on the title is slipping fast.
