FEATURES: Who has made the Fab Fifteen this season?

The 2024-25 season in North Wales women’s football is nicely underway now, but it is still early enough to predict which players might be worth watching over the next seven months.

Similarly to the men’s Dynamic Dozen feature, we try to avoid making obvious choices, i.e. players who are pretty certain to do well, but do attempt to get a cross-section of talent selected from across the majority of North Wales clubs.

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL FAB 15 2024-25

1 Taylia Chaloner (Flint Town United)

Tenacious, hard-working defender in her third season with Flint.

Has made 37 appearances for the club, scoring twice, and was a key member of last season’s North Wales Women’s League East championship-winning side.

Never stops battling for the cause, a great team-player and is improving all the time.

2 Rosie O’Brien (CPD Y Rhyl 1879)

Rosie O’Brien (white) is a consistent performer for Rhyl 1879

Former Rhyl FC player who became part of the newly-formed CPD Y Rhyl 1879 side in 2021.

Won the North Wales Women’s League title with the Lilywhites in 2021-22 and was a regular in the Genero Adran North last term.

Has played in 36 games for the team and is a lively left wing-back who defends well and often joins the attack with great impact.

3 Natasha Spearing (Connah’s Quay Nomads)

Nineteen-year-old who joined Nomads in the summer and is already proving a great addition, featuring in all three wins to date and scoring in the 2-1 Adran Trophy win over Llandudno.

Young, athletic and technical MF who can operate in central or in wide areas, she played for Northop Hall under-17s before joining Wrexham AFC Women in 2021-22.

She made 46 appearances for the club, featuring in 32 games and scoring 19 goals for the Under-19s and making 14 first team outings, usually as a substitute.

4 Beth Roberts (CPD Merched Henllan)

No-one quite attracts attention like a goalscorer and Beth is certainly one of those.

She has already netted nine times in three games for new senior side CPD Merched Henllan, which competes in the North Wales Women’s League East, this season.

In the juniors from under 14 to under-17, she notched 59 goals in 62 matches,

5 Laura Pratt (Airbus UK Broughton)

Lively and exciting young forward who made a good impression in the tier 2 Genero Adran North last season.

The 17-year-old has already grabbed three goals in two matches this season for an Airbus team adjusting to life in the tier 3 North Wales Women’s League East.

Since the 2021-22 season, when she turned out for the Under-16s, Laura has notched 27 goals in 46 club matches.

6 Catrin Roberts (CPDM Bangor)

Wales Under-16 international Catrin is a highly-rated goalkeeper who is thrilled to be playing in tier 2 Adran North this season.

Aged just 16, Catrin has previously represented Llangefni, Bangor, Caernarfon Town Under-14s and the FAW Academy North Under-15 and U17 teams.

Her proudest moment is representing her country in Serbia at the UEFA Tournament, in which she earned her Welsh U16’s cap.

7 Ruby Hastings (Flint Town United)

Dashing right-winger with a real eye for goal – her second in a recent 3-1 win at Rhyl was a finish of the highest class.

Aged 18, Ruby was with Northop Hall Under-17s before joining Flint at the start of 2023-24.

She went on to be an ever-present in the Silkwomen side which won the North Wales Women’s League East title with a perfect 12 straight victories, hitting seven goals over the season,

8 Amy Chesters (Kinmel Bay)

Perhaps one of the more obvious choices given she has scored five goals in her last two games, but I’ve rated Amy’s play highly since I saw her represent NFA in 2021/22..

This is what a Kinmel Bay team-mate said about her this week: “She’s awesome, so versatile, can play anywhere on the pitch and always delivers. She’s amazing, we’re so lucky to have her as part of the KB team/family.”

A key player in an ever-improving Kinmel Bay side.

9 Llywela Edwards (CPDM Y Felinheli)

Llywela Edwards (left) with Felinheli manager Aaron Jones-Evans and her fellow new signings

Wide-left attacking player with power, pace and a great delivery who has made a fine start for new club Felinheli.

Llywela was top-scorer for Corwen in their first season in the North Wales Women’s League Division Two, notching 12 goals in 2018-19.

She moved to South Wales to study law but continued with her football.

In 2021-22 and 2022-23, she represented Cardiff Wanderers in the South Wales Women’s and Girls League Combined, scoring a fantastic 52 goals in 39 matches.

Last season she joined Taffs Well of SWWGL Division One, notching up six goals in three games.

10 Amber Brown (Caernarfon Town)

Aged just 17, Amber is a goal-getter who has shone brightly since stepping up to senior football.

In March 2024, she scored a hat-trick as Caernarfon Town stunned second-place Llangefni Town with a 5-3 victory in the NWWFL West Division.

Strong and with an ability to keep hold of the ball, Amber will be one to watch again this season, having already appeared on the scoresheet once.

11 Jess Woods (Trearddur Bay)

Great prospect who scored the winner for Trearddur Bay on her debut against Caernarfon Town.

Her manager Ali Thomas said: “It’s no secret that Trearddur Bay have struggled to score goals for a few seasons. We advertised for new players and Jess responded.

“She recently moved down from Doncaster, having previously played for Rossington Main FC in England, and is a former Doncaster Belles player.”

The 19-year-old scored four goals in her two pre-season friendlies and then delivered that free-kick decider in the 3-2 league triumph over Caernarfon.

Ali added: “She works really hard for the team and her passing and crosses are excellent. I’m looking forward to her scoring many more goals this season.”

12 Isabella Nardo (Northop Hall)

Full back or centre half, aged 18, who is in her third season with the Northop Hall senior women’s team.

She has made 38 first team appearances to date for the North Wales Women’s League East side.

Isabella is a powerful/strong player who plays with passion. She wins a lot of tackles and is always looking to turn defence into attack.

13 Abi Cooke (Denbigh Town)

Nineteen-year-old who has featured in all four of Denbigh’s games so far.

She started her football at Denbigh aged 11 before moving onto the Wrexham Racecourse Academy, then the very strong Penrhyn Bay Girls.

Her manager at Denbigh, Ellen Lawson, said: “She’s committed, enthusiastic and has slotted into the team. If she carries on with the same attitude she should develop into a very good senior player.”

14 Annest Roberts (CPDM Llanystumdwy)

Aged just 16, this promising young midfielder spent two seasons at Porthmadog where she was a regular in the Under-14 and U16 sides in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Joined Llanystumdwy in her first full year of senior football after turning 16 halfway through the 2023-24 season.

She made nine appearances for the Parc Dwyfor side, which included the NWCFA Challenge Cup Final against CPDM Y Felinheli.

Annest has started this season off well after coming back from an injury.

15 Katie Spruce (Llangefni Town)

One of the best goalkeepers in North Wales Women’s Football, especially when it comes to one-on-ones and shot stopping.

Has played for Manchester City, Kinmel Bay, Abergele (Pentre), Holywell, Denbigh Town and NFA, where her performances between the sticks were a huge factor in the Rhyl side maintaining tier 2 status last season.

This season she has joined Llangefni Town of tier 3 where her all-round goalkeeping skills should make her a stand-out performer.

Again, perhaps an obvious choice considering she is well-known as being a top keeper, but she deserves so much more recognition than she gets.
