Wednesday football: Caernarfon Town strike late to win at Flint, Brymbo beat Druids in tier 5 derby

Matty Jones drilled home an 87th minute winner which edged Caernarfon up to seventh in the Cymru Premier.

The Canaries took a fifth minute lead when an inswinging corner from the right by Jones was spilled by home keeper Jack Flint and Paulo Mendes nudged the ball over the line.

Flint produced a fine diving save from Louis Lloyd’s 18-yard effort before Zack Clarke cut in from the left and stabbed over the bar.

The Silkmen rallied and on 27 minutes Stephen McMullan did well to keep out a Florian Yonsian strike after good work from Elliott Reeves on the right.

Lee Fowler’s men levelled on 40 when Issack Lambert headed in a pinpoint cross from Ben Hughes, whose initial corner had been returned to him.

Lambert nearly added a second when he was denied by McMullan’s legs, then Joshua Jones’ swirling lob came back off the bar. Well poised at 1-1 come half time.

After the break Caernarfon came out firing, Lloyd blasting just over before Clarke raced through on goal, but Flint thwarted him bravely.

On 83 minutes, Clarke was fouled in the area and took the resultant penalty himself, but struck the post and the danger was cleared.

Caernarfon would not be denied, and three minutes from the end, some slick play from the Cofis saw Darren Thomas lay a nice pass into the path of Jones whose left-foot missile was too good for Flint.

Yonsian was denied a late equaliser by a cracking McMullan stop.

Two teams which used to ply their trade at a much higher level met in a tier 5 contest at The Rock tonight.

It was second-place Brymbo who emerged comfortable 3-0 victors, an own goal breaking the deadlock on 27 minutes.

Brandon Jones made it 2-0 in the 57th minute and Matthew Rees added a third with 80 gone.
