Remaining fixtures
Tuesday, May 21 – Mynydd Isa v Corwen, Penyffordd Lions v FC Queen’s Park
Friday, May 24 – Corwen v Penyffordd Lions
Three first half goals earned Town the victory which keeps them well placed to finish runners-up in the Premier Division.
Quay have now finished their fixtures and are six points clear of Penyffordd Lions in third, who have a better goal difference.
Lions can still finish second, but have to win their final two games against FC Queen’s Park (home – May 21) and champions Corwen (away – May 24).
Connah’s Quay Town rounded off their league campaign on a winning note at Greenfield on Saturday.
Freddie Watts put the visitors ahead from a Kyle Reid assist on 16 minutes.
Pascal Gomez was then the supplier for further goals scored by Lewis Harris and Jake Leonard before the break.
Ryan Jones pulled one back for Greenfield from the penalty spot with six minutes remaining, but Town were worthy winners.
Perhaps not quite the result they were looking for on the night they received the league champions trophy, but it was what Corwen have done over the season that mattered most.
In their first game since being crowned North East Wales Premier Division champions, a bumper crowd turned out at the War Memorial Ground.
Since claiming the point needed for the title in their previous fixture at Penyffordd Lions, Corwen had also been awarded a Tier 3 licence by the FAW, meaning they secure promotion back to the Ardal Leagues at the first time of asking.
Mynydd Isa players and the match officials formed a guard of honour for the Corwen players as they took to the field.
In the 15th minute, Henry Evans unleashed a low shot which was saved by visiting goalkeeper Karl Billingsley.
Top-scorer Owen Cordiner’s shot was blocked by a defender on its way to goal, taking the pace off it, and allowing Billingsley to stretch and make a save.
In the interval, Isa’s Billingsley had to be replaced in goal, and with no keeper on the bench Michael Fleetwood swapped centre back duties to don the gloves for the second period.
Scott Evans hit one just wide for the hosts, before Robbie Williams struck a great shot, but Fleetwood pulled off a great fingertip save.
Fleetwood did really well to deny Tom Williams before the stand-in was able to catch the ball from a close range header via the resulting corner.
Three minutes later, Mynydd’s Jay Wiles went for goal from a 25-yard free kick, which looped up into the air and was dropping towards goal, forcing Danny Jones to tip the ball onto the post.
The ball rebounded into the path of a visiting player, who was able to find the back of the net, but had his joy curtailed as the offside flag had been raised.
Cordiner threatened twice late on for the home side, but was out of luck.
Following the final whistle the Corwen players were awarded the league trophy by league officials, with captain Scott Evans given the honour of lifting the prize.
