Anthony Weaver will step down as Conwy Borough manager at end of season

Anthony Weaver

Anthony Weaver will step down from his role as first team manager of Conwy Borough at the end of this season.

Weaver took over as Boro boss in September 2022, replacing Stuart Howson.

At the end of 2022-23, the Tangerines were relegated from Tier 2 Cymru North, while this season the Morfa club are fifth-from-bottom in Tier 3 Ardal North West.

Yet there have been some encouraging results this term, not least a 3-0 home win over former leaders CPD Y Rhyl 1879 and a 3-2 success away to champions-elect Flint Mountain.

Weaver is a former manager of Rhydymwyn, leading them into the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Premier Division in 2019-20.

His impressive CV includes head of youth phase and academy coach at Connah’s Quay Nomads, coach at the Liverpool FC International Academy and a UEFA A and Elite Youth licence.

Nomads Academy U15s were crowned FA Wales Academy Northern champions this season under Weaver and James Duff.

On departing Y Morfa, Weaver said: “It’s with a very heavy heart that I have made the decision to step down as first team manager of Conwy Borough FC with effect from conclusion of the Ardal League North West League (season).

“Firstly I would like to say what an honour it has been to lead this fantastic club over the last 18 months and I have definitely become a lifelong fan of Borough.

This hasn’t been an easy decision but with changes in my personal circumstances and also to give the club the best chance to build further on the foundations that have been started this season, I feel it’s a good time to give someone else the chance to take to the club to the next level.

“When coming into the club, the team was bottom of Tier 2 and in need of change of mentality. My focus and aim was clear to try and stabilise and bring some heart back to the team and give the fantastic community a team they can resonate with, but also be proud of, and I do hope people can see that.

“The fact that talented local lads and exciting young players have been breaking into the first team means the future is definitely looking bright for the club.

“My grandad was born and raised in Conwy so was always a place I had an emotional tie with and feel proud to have been able to be a part of the community even for a short time.

“I would like to thank the group of volunteers and committee members that keep the club running, not big in numbers but big on heart and hard work and without these people the club would not be here.

“Would like to say the biggest thanks to Chris and Darren for giving me the opportunity and all the support and backing from day 1 and I can’t thank them enough. Also thanks to committe members no longer with the club, but whose hard work behind the scenes was appreciated.

“Lastly I would like to thank the players who it’s been a privilege to work with and although it’s been a tough season of injury and transition, they have shown when all available the team can compete at with the top sides, so looking forward to see what they can do with a full season together.

“And finally my management team Duff, Mart and Stew who I couldn’t do without.”

DAVE THOMAS

In recognition of his service, Conwy Borough has appointed Dave Thomas as a club ambassador.

Dave is a modest man but was delighted to accept the role, saying: “I am very pleased and honoured to be representing the club as an Ambassador.

It’s a really friendly club and I will do my best to spread a positive message about the good people involved. Thank you for recognising me in this way.”
