North Wales women’s football’s best 10 goals of the 2023-24 season

TOP 10 GOALS OF THE SEASON IN NORTH WALES WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

These are Grassroots North Wales’ personal choices based on what we’ve seen, either live at games we’ve reported on, or on video clips.

We may have missed a fair few stunning goals off this list, but we can’t really take the blame for that as unlike with the English or Cymru Premier leagues, or the EFL, not all matches in North Wales women’s football are available on video.

10 Rosie Hughes (FLINT TOWN UNITED 3 Berriew 1 – December 10, 2023)

On a muddy surface, Rosie burst down the left wing, eased past two defenders, raced into the box and beautifully worked the ball onto her right foot to beat the keeper.

9 Sophie Bancroft (DENBIGH TOWN 2 Kinmel Bay 1 – February 25, 2024)

Denbigh were one-down and running out of time when substitute Bancroft received the ball wide left and spectacularly sent a lofted effort into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Only she will know for sure if it was a goal attempt or a cross, but it looked mightily impressive.

8 Laura Williams (CPD Y RHYL 3 Airbus 1 – November 19, 2023)

A free kick on the right 25 yards out. Laura’s deadly left foot made a perfect connection and the ball flew in beyond the keeper. A trademark Laura goal.

7 Jenna Tugwell-Allsup (CPDM FELINHELI 5 Llanfair United 0 – March 31, 2024)

Tugwell-Allsup produced a moment of magic to add to her highlight reel of quality goals this season, beating three players on her way into the opposition box and then firing an unstoppable shot in the top right hand corner.

6 Katie Midwinter (CPDM Bangor 1 CPDM FELINHELI 3 – January 31, 2024)

A very special goal. Following a fine build up from Felinheli, with Shannon Jones at the heart of it, the ball found its way to Nel Huws, whose perfectly-weighted pass picked out Midwinter, who took one touch and rifled home a missile.

5 Rosie Hughes (Berriew 0 FLINT TOWN UNITED 2 – January 21, 2024)

The 18-year-old dazzler broke from midfield, outpaced opponents, then 20 yards out switched the ball onto her right foot before curling a cracker into the top corner.
Her watching grandad shouted: “what a goal! what a beauty!

4 Tegan Crockett (FLINT TOWN UNITED 4 Northop Hall 1 – March 28, 2024)

Fittingly, Flint’s final league goal of their title-winning season was one of their very best.
A corner floated into the box from the right was volleyed home in spectacular fashion by Tegan, the ball appearing to be behind her before she swivelled and made a lethal connection.
The whole ground erupted in applause.

3 Lois Thomas (PWLLHELI 3 Flint Town United 2 – May 5, 2024)

What a goal to win the North Wales Women’s League Play-Off Final in extra time!
Lois burst down the right, beat her marker, got to the byline, then cut inside, working the ball onto her left foot and curling in a phenomenal goal.

2 Sofie Owen (CPD Y Rhyl 1879 0 LLANDUDNO 4 – January 14, 2024)

Out of nowhere, the captain hit the perfect shot from about 40 yards out beyond the excellent Rhyl goalkeeper Bethan Thomas and into the roof of the net.
This goal has been talked about and celebrated many times. The highlight of an outstanding player’s season.

1 Lili Jones (WREXHAM AFC WOMEN 2 Swansea City 3 – March 24, 2024)

The darling of the Wrexham fans scored a goal none of them will ever forget.
It was 0-0 against fellow top-three side Swansea when Keren Allen found Phoebe Davies, who fed Amber Lightfoot and her touch was latched onto by Lili Jones, who decisively and magnificently hit a precise 30 to 40 yard effort over Swansea keeper Chelsea Herbert into the net.
Such an amazing first-time finish from a player who never stops improving.
