Stand-in keeper Tom Scott produced a last-gasp penalty save to send Trearddur Bay into the semi-finals of the North Wales Coast West Premier Division league cup.

Top-scorer Callum Graves had already notched his 40th of the season in the Friday night classic, but his spot-kick which would have forced a shoot-out was kept out by veteran midfielder Scott, between the sticks due to regular stopper Paul Pritchard’s absence,

It was a last eight tie befitting the top two teams in the Premier and – no disrespect to the other teams competing – would surely have been more suitable as the final.

With a number of regulars missing for the visitors, six of their development squad made the step up and not for the first time of late did a superb job.

Tigers’ Callum Davidson got the scoring underway in the 18th minute.

That lead lasted just under 10 minutes as Matty Reynolds equalised with his 25th goal this term from an Asa Thomas assist.

There was time for one more goal before the interval, Graves putting the home team ahead again in the 41st minute with number 40 of 2023-24.

The second half saw the Beach Boys push for a goal with Menai looking dangerous on the break.

In the 53rd minute the prolific Asa Thomas got Bay level with his 50th goal of the season.

Menai Bridge made some changes and it seemed to swing the game in their favour.

The Bay defence coped well, though, and limited the home team to some half-chances.

It looked like it was heading to extra time until in the 90th minute, Tigers’ Dean Redmond chipped keeper Scott from distance to prompt wild celebrations from the stripes.

With a couple of stoppages during the game the ref indicated four minutes of additional time. That’s all that the Beach Boys needed as Les Davies scored on 90+2.

An added half-hour would be needed and there was a lengthy stoppage a few minutes after the kick off when Tigers player Darren Jones picked up what looked like a bad injury.

This delayed the game for a good 10 minutes and when it restarted it was Menai having the better chances but again the Bay back-line stood strong.

The visitors were making their own opportunities at the other end, though, hitting the framework twice and missing a good one-on-one opportunity.

Then in the 106th minute Trearddur made it 4-3.

Casey Gregg struck after a great effort from Les Davies bounced about the area only to fall at the full-back’s feet and he made no mistake.

The drama continued when Menai’s Redmond was shown a straight red for arguing with the referee.

Menai went searching for the equaliser and that looked like it had come when the ref awarded a penalty for a handball.

With what was certain to be the last kick of the game, Graves put the ball low to the left only for Scott to dive and make the save.

Trearddur said after the game: “Special mention to the young lads from the development squad that stepped up and put in a great shift, also to Tom Scott who stepped up to play in goal. We’d like to wish Darren Jones all the best and hope the injury turns out to be not as bad as it looked.”

CPD Llanberis 4 Gwalchmai 3

Kurt Hellfeld’s 89th minute strike won an epic tie for Llanberis.

Both Friday night quarter-finals produced seven goals and ended 4-3.

Peter Mansoor netted the only goal of the first half after 24 minutes from a Gethin Maxwell assist.

It stayed 1-0 until the hour, when three goals in eight minutes put Gwalchmai in charge.

Marc Evans scored two of them and Chris Bennett was also on target.

A Declan Jones own goal after 72 put the Darans back in it and two minutes later Nidian Huws made it all-square.

It was anyone’s tie now and Hellfeld delivered the decider from a Dion Owen assist.

Llanrug United 3 CPD Penrhyndeudraeth 1

Reece Evans put Penrhyn in front in the 19th minute, but Llanrug turned the tables in the second half to win with goals from Osian Williams on 54, Owain Jones after 75 and Jonathan Sadler with 80 on the clock – his 22nd goal of the campaign.

Talysarn Celts 0 Glantraeth 4

A fourth straight win for Glantraeth who continued to end their season in impressive fashion.

Gethin Davies put the Anglesey visitors ahead close to half time, then after the break Andy Clarke, Iwan Sawicz and Tomos Wyn Hughes added crucial further goals.
