Match of the Day – North Wales Coast East Premier: Llandyrnog upset odds again

Llandyrnog (yellow and black) taking on Kinmel Bay

NORTH WALES COAST EAST PREMIER DIVISION – FEBRUARY 3

Llandyrnog United 2 (Lawson 54, Wynne 89)
Kinmel Bay 0

For the second home game running Llandyrnog caused a major upset by beating high-flying opponents at Cae Nant.

Two weeks after ending NFA’s unbeaten record, Dyrny saw off a Kinmel Bay outfit on a run of four straight wins which has lifted them to fourth in the Premier Division.

In years gone by, Llandyrnog developed a reputation of cutting the ‘big boys’ down to size on their sloping pitch and they have revived past memories with their most recent performances.

The first half belonged to Bay in fairness, they had a few opportunities that looked more clear cut than Dyrny’s, but Ryan Bennett in the home goal looked relatively untroubled.

The deadlock was broken nine minutes into the second half.

Robert Lawson swung in a flat free kick from distance which caught the keeper out and drifted straight in.

Kinmel Bay look to clear their lines

Kinmel Bay looked like they would deservedly get an equaliser, rattling the bar and the base of the post, but uncharacteristically, they could not find that goal.

Dyrny wrapped it up late on when Ben Green chased down what everyone with any sense would have called a lost cause as the ball ran down the famous slope and was inevitably heading out for a goal kick.

But Green didn’t think so. He ran hard, got on the end of the ball, and crossed it for Tom Wynne who delicately and expertly finished with a cheeky back heel flick to seal the win.

Today’s other Premier Division scores

Llanfairfechan Town 2-2 Cerrigydrudion
Meliden 3-2 Bro Cernyw
Mochdre Sports 1-7 Llansannan
NFA 7-0 Abergele
Rhuddlan Town 1-6 Penmaenmawr Phoenix
