North Wales Women’s League East: Flint edge a very tight game at Kinmel Bay

Zoe Stopford’s 14th goal of the season was all that separated the sides at the end of a close-fought East league clash at Y Morfa Leisure Centre ground.

Flint maintained their 100 percent record with a sixth straight league win, but faced probably their hardest test of the season yet against a determined Kinmel Bay.

Winning manager Elliott Hale said: “A tough and tasty battle for 90 minutes, but the fight and desire in this team is on another level and that is why we are where we are.”

Kinmel Bay’s experienced stalwart player Georgia Williams commented: “We played a great game and received some great feedback from Flint.

Kinmel Bay were together as a team all through the game

“It was a very tight game. We had some close chances and Jess Jones was through on goal but her shot took it over the top of goal.

“Considering we lost 3-0 there at the start of the season, to only lose 1-0 in the second half at home is a great achievement for us to be honest.”

Top-scorer Stopford was Flint’s stand-out player, winning first and second balls and making successful slide tackles. Seren Williams, captain of Kinmel Bay, was named their player of the match.

The Silkwomen back-line kept a solid line throughout the whole game, while goalkeeper Becky Bott produced some important second-half saves.

At the other end, Kinmel Bay’s keeper Shelby Wild was her usual exceptional self, making some super stops.

In the first half Flint struggled to get into the game and play the football they wanted, but after the break they stuck together, got the early goal to put them ahead, then dug deep to hold on for the points.

The goal came via a Rosie Hughes corner which Stopford volleyed in.

Rosie Hughes said after the game: “Credit to Kinmel Bay, as they gave us a very good game with a lot of standout performances from them.”
