Second club resigns from the North Wales Coast East Football League within a week

Rhyl Dragons in action during the 2021-22 season

The North Wales Coast East Football League has lost another team.

Rhyl Dragons have resigned from Tier 5 Division One.

Their withdrawal comes just days after CPD Caer Clwyd’s departure.

As was the case with Clwyd, Dragons’ results will now be expunged from the table, leaving the division with 11 teams.

Rhyl Dragons were formed in 2020 during the Covid lockdown. Due to the pandemic’s effect on football, the club were unable to begin competing until the 2021-22 season.

In that debut campaign, Dragons finished a promising sixth in Division One, with a record of 11 wins, seven draws and eight defeats.

Last season (2022-23) Dragons ended up eighth with eight victories, two draws and 12 defeats.

This campaign, the Rhyl side were sitting one off the bottom with one win, a draw and three losses on their slate.

They did register another win over Caer Clwyd, but that result became void after the Denbigh team folded.

Dragons had played just five league fixtures in 2023-24, with fielding a team often proving a problem.

They had not played a game since losing 4-0 at Glan Conwy on September 30.

At the start of this season, Dragons secured an unwelcome entry in the record books when they lost 18-0 to St Asaph in the Welsh Cup. It was the biggest ever win by a North Wales team in the competition’s long history.

Dragons’ biggest win was an 11-0 victory at Betws-y-Coed in 2021-22, a game which saw the club’s highest marksman Adam Cassidy score four times.

Doing the double over fellow Rhyl side NFA in 2021-22 was another notable achievement.

NWCFA president Mr Bryan Roberts confirmed Rhyl Dragons have resigned from the East League and their results this season will be deleted.
