Flint Mountain manager Aden Shannon ecstatic over Welsh Cup giant-killing

There cannot have been a happier man in Flintshire than Aden Shannon on Friday night.

Shannon’s football club Flint Mountain caused a huge Welsh Cup upset by beating Tier 2 Cymru North leaders Holywell Town 3-1 at the Essity Stadium.

It was surely the biggest win yet for Tier 3 Ardal North West outfit Mountain since they formed in 2009.

Shannon, former boss of Flint Town United and a joint-manager at Runcorn Town, took over at Mountain in June 2022.

The team finished fourth in their first season in Ardal NW and have begun the current campaign steadily, presently sitting in sixth spot.

Mountain are now into the last 32 of the national Welsh Cup, with the possibility of them drawing Flint Town United in a dream derby.

Shannon was delighted with Friday’s well-deserved defeat of Holywell, Rob Hughes bagging a double and Lloyd Ellams also on the mark.

The former Connah’s Quay Nomads, Welshpool Town, Porthmadog, Cefn Druids and Conwy Borough striker told Grassroots North Wales: “It’s obviously a fantastic a win against a very good in-form side.

“The first thing we had to do was match their desire and work ethic and I knew if we did that we would have a good chance and the lads were superb from start to finish.

“We will enjoy the win as a club and hopefully we can have a good run in the competition.”

The draw for Round 3 of the JD Welsh Cup will be streamed on RedWall+ at 8 pm on Wednesday, 18 October.
