Wednesday football – Gresford score 99th minute winner, Mountain cup joy, Airbus women win on pens

Charley Edge scored a 99th minute winner for Gresford Athletic

WEDNESDAY NIGHT REPORTS – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4

CYMRU NORTH

Gresford Athletic 2 (Ellis 90+5, Edge 90+9)
Buckley Town 1 (Smith 52)

Two goals deep into added time snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for a Gresford side which made it six wins on the bounce.

This dramatic triumph at The Rock edged the Colliers up to seventh in the Cymru North, while a Buckley outfit which led from the 52nd minute was left to wonder what might have been.

Athletic had an early chance, but the in-form Haci Ozlu saw his shot from an angle saved by Ryan Goldston.

Goldston parried away a good strike from Charley Edge on 29 minutes before another Ozlu effort whizzed narrowly past the post.

Half-time arrived goalless, but seven minutes into the second period Adam Smith edged the visitors in front.

Gresford pressed for an equaliser, but it was not until the 95th minute that their labours bore fruit.

Harvey Ellis took a touch on the edge of the box and drilled into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

A point salvaged for the hosts surely – but there was more drama to come.

In the 99th minute, Gresford won a free kick which Edge fired into the top corner to send the home camp into raptures.

ARDAL NORTHERN LEAGUE CUP

Flint Mountain 3 (Sconce 14, Hayes 24 & 63)
CPD Llannefydd 1 (M Jones 32)

Veteran striker Mike Hayes again proved his worth to Flint Mountain with a double in tonight’s League Cup clash at the Essity Stadium.

Signed in the summer, the much-travelled front man made it 10 goals for the season and five in his last three matches for Aden Shannon’s Ardal North West side.

Jack Sconce put Mountain in front after 14 minutes from a Calyn Spencer assist, then on 24 scorer turned provider to set up Hayes for his first.

Llannefydd kept themselves in the tie when Morgan Jones pulled one back after 32 minutes and 2-1 was how it remained up to the break.

Hayes put away the hosts’ third in the 63rd minute and had the chance of a hat-trick on 82 but missed from the penalty spot.

NEWFA WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CUP

Amlwch Town 1
Airbus UK Broughton 1
(Airbus won 2-0 on pens)

Genero Adran North visitors Airbus got the result they wanted on Anglesey, but needed penalties to see off North Wales League hosts Amlwch, who played really well and could consider themselves unlucky not to win in normal time.

Ellie Jones put the islanders in front on 44 minutes from an Emily Ridges assist, but the Wingmakers levelled after 69 through an Anna Owen goal from a corner.

Spot-kicks were needed to settle the issue and Amlwch were guilty of four misses, meaning Airbus had to score just twice to win the game and that is what they did through Bethan Morris and Laura Pratt.

Ruby Stevens saved two spot-kicks for the Wingmakers.
