Match of the Night: Lex XI v Caerwys – tier 4 North East Wales League Premier Division

For the second match in a row Lex needed a late goal from Nicky Chesters to secure a result.

Last weekend, Chesters was the Lawmen’s hero after grabbing a 96th minute winner in a 3-2 opening day triumph at champions FC Queen’s Park.

On Friday night, the reward was not quite as great, but still Chesters’ 85th minute strike rescued a point for the hosts against promoted Caerwys.

On a wet evening at Stansty Park, Wrexham, a good crowd gathered to see both teams struggle to get going in the first 20 minutes.

It was Caerwys who then started to knock the ball around well and they took the lead in the 29th minute.

After some good work down the left wing from Brandon Jones, he cut the ball back to the edge of the box where Matthew Gilsenan applied the finish.

Caerwys continued to impress and managed to double their lead just before half time, Jones setting up Gilsenan for his second.

For the second half Lex came out a different team and started to produce much better stuff.

It did not take long for them to get the rewards with a lovely chipped goal from Finn Dyer in the 49th minute.

Young sub Ben Williams then got his first goal for the club, bringing the Law level with 50 on the clock.

Against the run of play Caerwys managed to pull ahead again in the 55th minute, Adam Woosey benefiting from another Jones assist.

Lex kept battling and made it 3-3 in the 85th minute, Chesters with a great strike as Caerwys tried to clear a corner.

The last few minutes saw chance after chance for Lex with two efforts cleared off the line, but the visitors held out for a point.
