Century-making hero Sion Morris guides Colwyn Bay to Welsh Cup semi-final glory over Cardiff

Colwyn Bay hero Sion Morris hit 125 against mighty Cardiff

Welsh Cricket Cup semi-final – August 6, 2023

Colwyn Bay (38.1) 268-4 Cardiff (40) 267-7

Bay won by six wickets

Former Colwyn Bay skipper Sion Morris produced one of his greatest innings in 27 years at the club, scoring a magnificent 125 as the North Walians advanced to the Welsh Cup final today at Penrhyn Avenue.

Morris, 45, who has amassed close on 14,000 league runs for the club since making his debut in 1996, hit a fantastic century for a home side which chased down a huge total set by visitors Cardiff.

In the final, Colwyn Bay will now meet either Brymbo or Swansea, who clash in the other semi in South Wales next weekend.

Today’s battle at Rhos-on-Sea saw Bay win the toss and invite South Wales Premier League Division One side Cardiff to bat.

The capital outfit posted a massive 267-7 off 40 overs, Henry Hurle top-scoring with 115, Steffan Jones adding 59 and James Meggitt 51.

Jack Parry picked up 2-39 from eight overs for the hosts, while there was a wicket each for Ryan Holtby, George Johansen and Adam Campion.

In reply, Bay lost skipper Johansen (28) and Will Evans (18) before Morris, who skippered Bay to their sole Welsh Cup success in 2015 and Campion put on the match-turning partnership.

Campion made 50 before talisman Morris departed for 125 off 113 balls, hitting 16 fours and three sixes in an unforgettable knock.

Will Higginson and Luke Russell then saw Bay over the line on 268-4 with 11 balls to spare, former Glamorgan medium-pacer Greg Holmes snapping up 3-29.

A truly magnificent win for North Wales cricket over one of the South Wales giants.
