One of the greatest days ever for North Wales cricket!
The heroes of Colwyn Bay upset the odds big style as they defeated South Wales Premier League Division One champions Swansea by seven wickets in a high-scoring final at Usk Cricket Club in Monmouthshire.
George Johansen’s side lifted the national cup for the second time in the club’s history, following on their success of 2015.
Today brought only the seventh North Wales triumph in the Welsh Cup’s 51-year history, Brymbo having lifted it three times, Northop Hall and Llandudno both once.
While the Bay have struggled in the Liverpool Competition 1st XI ECB Premier League this season, they have shone like a beacon in the national knockout.
With them being the current holders, South Wales champions and packed with Wales internationals, Swansea were expected to lift the cup for a record-equalling eighth time.
But the stars of Penrhyn Avenue would not be denied.
Bay skipper Johansen won the toss and put Swansea into bat.
The Swans chalked up a formidable 231-6 off 40 overs, openers Cameron Hemp (69) and Brad Wathan (45) leading the way.
For the North Walians, Sion Morris took 3-62 and Adam Campion an impeccable 2-23 off eight overs.
In reply, Colwyn lost Will Evans for 17 with the score on 42, but then Morris and Johansen put on 88 for the second wicket.
The skipper went for 59, but Morris, hero of the semi-final victory over Cardiff with a century, top-scored again with 76.
When he departed, Bay were 194-3, but Campion (49 not out) and Will Higginson (17 no) saw the Welsh team to 232-3 off 38.5 overs, clinching an unforgettable victory with seven balls to spare.
